Ground yourself in the truth of who God is!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Knowing God Study Guide (Paperback)
If you want to be grounded in the truth and find out who God is, I recommend you to read `Knowing God'. This book tells of the attributes of the almighty, loving, compassionate God. However, for those who perhaps are not ready for such heavy reading, it would be best to use the `Knowing God Study Guide' to supplement the book. This will further explain what is already discussed in the book such as God's grace, love and majesty, and can also be used as a resource in your devotional time to help you grow as a Christian.

Catchy Title, Maybe Classic, But Not Profound,

Packer's book - Knowing God - may be a classic but it is not profound. I believe what it is, is an answer in part to those authentic Christians who have found their lives embroiled and perplexed in the sufferings of Christ. Packer does make several good points in his book that every "true" Christian should be aware of (before sending your money off to some TV evangelist), but while Packer appears to admonish the doctrine of some Christian groups as practiced by many "status quo" or "celebrity churches", his book is more a review of "correct" doctrine than a profound revelation of knowing God face to face as Moses did. And so I regard this book as more of a compact Bible study regarding Packer's view of strictly correct doctrine with a handful of pages that truly "tell it like it is". I believe this book is a good study for the new Christian that truly desires to know God more but ironically Packer, although drawing a strong distinction between knowing God and knowing about God, dedicates most of his book to knowing about doctrine. The new Christian should understand that knowing God is something that happens between you and God, not as a result of necessarily reading this book or practicing strictly correct doctrine.

I bought the study guide for my son who is in a bible study in college. I went through Knowing God and the Study Guide about 30 years ago. JI Packer's book is solid, practical, biblical Christianity. It is a classic! This Study Guide opens discussion and further study by a group or individual. One of our Sunday School classes at church also used the guide. Highly recommended!

Great But Not Perfect...,
This review is from: Knowing God Study Guide (Paperback)
Great book with a great premise. Those who know God... Have great energy for God... Have great boldness for God... Have great contentment in God. Truly this book opens the door to a wealth of understanding that will inspire the reader with more energy, boldness & contentment as they learn more of God's character. God's love in this book, however, is described as only being selective and is guaranteed to have the opposite effect on any reader who swallows this error. Just remember that even the best of thinkers are wrong sometimes. Boost your energy with John 3:16 as you work your way through the love chapter.

Knowing God by J. I. Packer,

This review is from: Knowing God Study Guide (Paperback)
Our small group at church is reading and discussing the book. We are older adults whose ages range from mid-fiftes to early seventys. None of us would call ourselves "intellectuals" and reading the book for some has been a challenge because of the depth of the subject matter that Dr. Packer addresses.
However all of us love the challenge and we are discoverimg that "knowing God" is a marvelous adventure of life with our Lord. Reading and discussing the book makes us examine what we say we believe and make an "intelligent" decision that deepens our faith, enriches our witness and effects our "walk."

Make sure you realize this is the study guide... Brainfart on my behalf. Other than that, this would be excellent if I was teaching this and had the actual book.

My subject said it all. However, I always can make more life-application questions based the questions in the book. It helps me to lead book studies in a small group though. Sometimes I use these questions to help me to focus the key points to discuss in a group and summarize it.

I see that I'm not the only one who received an $8.00, 31 page study guide, to KNOWING GOD by J.I. Packer. All of the many reviews referred to the book and not to the study guide. All you had to do was print "Out of Stock, temporarily." As a long time customer, I am truly disappointed. Three stars, not because it isn't good, but because it's a terrible value.

Knowing God (Study Guide),

I Googled "Knowing God" -- looking for the wonderful book by that title -- and ended up buying a "Study Guide" instead. I am no dummy (although I may behave like one in situations like this one), but I actually missed the smallish sub-title that marks this as a study guide.... Thought you might appreciate this tip. And as study guides go, this is not the best I have examined....
