Book Description

In the heated debates over gun control, it's sometimes hard for a person unfamiliar with guns to separate fact from fiction. Emotion and politics can distort the issue, leaving many wondering where the truth lies. "Knowing Guns" is an attempt to combat the massive disinformation, misinformation and outright lies swirling around the issue while, at the same time, providing non-partisan answers to the questions that often arise. Both fans of gun control and gun rights activists can all come away knowing far more about the political shenanigans taking place on both sides and, armed with this knowledge, find common ground to mutual advantage. Written for the average person without heavy jargon, fully footnoted and annotated, the book begins with an introduction to the author, Stu Chisholm; a unique individual who is both a part of, yet apart from, what we think of American "gun culture." From the bedrock of the issue, the Second Amendment, right on through to the final ethical and moral considerations of gun use and ownership, Stu provides a guided tour, with a running commentary of all the hot button issues and current events. In short, a must read for anyone interested in firearms and their politics for whatever reason.

About the Author

Mobile DJ, business owner/entrepreneur and author Stu Chisholm was born in Detroit, Michigan. A columnist for the DJ industry trade magazine, Mobile Beat, Stu's series on "DJ Security" contained a controversial segment on concealed carry and the use of guns. It was later included in, and expanded upon, in his book, "The Complete Disc Jockey," published in 2008. Running a business and pursuing what he considers logical security measures, Stu obtained his CCW permit in the state of Michigan in the late '90s and later became active in the gun rights movement. He joined the grass roots group MCRGO, the Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners, helping to reform Michigan's concealed carry law in 2001. Stu remains an active DJ, writer and activist, and is currently collaborating on an upcoming science-fiction book set in Detroit's near future. He is married to cable television producer, Janette Chisholm and lives in Roseville, Michigan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and Informative December 5, 2013
Format:Paperback
Clear and Informative. Stays clear of the usual partisan bloviating found on both sides of the issue.
I loved the way the e-book was formatted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers all sides, a very informative and well writen book September 26, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I ordered this book from Amazon because my knife was featured on then cover. Then I realized after reading it while traveling for work, it was very informative and well written. I related greatly with Mr. Chisholm and the way he was introduced to firearms. I then realized that many Americans may have been introduced the same way. The book covers everything from plinking to CCW. "Knowing Guns" also, covers the Constitution, the media, the government and the anti-firearm side of the issue. The only issue I had was with the Zimmerman incident, it was written before the trial had completely played out and Mr. Chisholm did point out that it was his opinion. I would highly recommend this book to both those who are thinking of getting their first firearm, the avid collector as well as anyone doing any kind of firearm research.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fair and unbiased view. October 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading this book, I was proud for the author; he can look at this project with his head held high. This book is the most evenly documented view of the gun control issue out there. He presents BOTH sides of the story with no obvious bias. A must-read for anyone on either side of this emotionally charged issue.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Review of the Author January 1, 2014
Format:Paperback
I have not read this book, nor would I consider wasting my money or time on it, as I am far too familiar with the author and his "arguments", which amount to nothing that can't be found on any NRA or gun-apologist web site or propaganda sheet.

Stu Chisholm, whose "expertise" is on spinning discs, and whose education was limited to a stint at a low-grade community college where he studied English and broadcasting, is as pure an advocate of gun ownership and use as anyone I've ever come across. He also displays an abject ignorance of authentic research and statistical analysis, cherry-picking the few studies which seem to agree with his considerable bias, ignoring the overwhelming field of contradictory science, and abusing and misrepresenting data to serve his personal agenda as a gun "rights" advocate.
