Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Carlin was the first foreign correspondent to interview Mandela as president. As South African correspondent for the London Independent, Carlin covered Mandela’s release from 27 years of imprisonment in 1990 and spent the next five years chronicling Mandela’s presidency. The two men last met in 2009 as Mandela’s health was failing. In this memoir, Carlin offers more than a news account of the presidency of an extraordinary world figure. He details the personal and political struggles of a man charged with holding together a fragile nation at the end of apartheid and coping with the heartbreak of his troubled marriage. Behind the scenes, Mandela was as gracious as he appeared in public, taking tea in the president’s chamber in contrast to the petty rules of apartheid, when he would have been restricted to drinking from a tin cup. Mandela set the right tone, coping with fearful whites, angry blacks, and a political party worried that he’d been co-opted after so many years in prison. Carlin portrays a 71-year-old man of stunning charisma, disarming journalists, detractors, former jailers, parliamentary opponents, and world figures from Bill Clinton to Queen Elizabeth. Written with obvious affection and admiration, this is a moving portrait of a philosophical and visionary man who was also pragmatic enough to know that anger and revenge would destroy South Africa. --Vanessa Bush

The author does a good job of walking the reader through the life of Mandela during the latter portions of his prison term and his leadership of the transformation of the culture of South Africa from racist apartheid through the development of a radically improved country. As I read of this remarkable man and his remarkable times, I found myself feeling much more hopeful that a man who is in his mid-sixties and often given to angry confrontation (me) might grow to learn to be a leader of reconciliation and dialog, and be a blessing to this world.

Knowing Mandela: A Personal Portrait by John Carlin is a very intimate look at one of the most important men of the 20th century and 21st century. The book shows Nelson Mandela as a total man with all his flaws and deficiencies. But within this man is greatness and the author does a great job at showing you the reader his strength. The book is clearly very well researched from extensive interviews with Mandela himself as well as people who were close to him. The book shows the reader what Nelson Mandela was all about. I enjoyed this book and I think you will too. I would definitely recommend, Knowing Mandela: A Personal Portrait.

Highly recommend this well written, facinating biogaphy. This covers a limitted number of years in the life of Mandela. The author manages to report the facts while allowing the reader to feel he/she is present as the sequences unfold. The book is very touching and emotional also. I knew Mandela was a great man but the biography gives true insight into the validity of Mandela's character and quantifies the reasons for his greatness..

I started reading the book just a few days before Mandela died, and had finished before his burial. I think that while watching the mourning of an entire nation for so long period of time made me feel like I was living a part of history. I was watching and reading at the same time how one man was able to unite so many diverse peoples into a unified nation.

This is an interesting work; it continues to shine a positive light on the great man. You get a sense from the writing, the author stood in awe of Nelson Mandela. He highlights what he perceived to be most effective political maneuver of Mandela, his ability to forgive those who trespassed against him. The author believes Madiba ‘won’ by working within the circumstances of the society he inherited as a result of being the leader of the revolution and being elected president. I found the author perspective interesting as he is not South African, I was hoping for a more subjective assessment of Mandela leadership style. Unfortunately, the spell of Nelson Mandela colors the writing of author. I was hoping for more probing insight on how he made his decisions and how he dealt with the consequences. Overall, this is a quick read with glowing commentary on the last great freedom fighter of his time.

I thought this book was beautifully written. It gave the reader the history of the time that Nelson Mandela became the President. Most importantly it showed the reader who this man was ... an amazing, intelligent, kind, compassionate man. A human being that we should all strive to be.
