Great Game!,

This review is from: Jumpstart Advanced Kindergarten (CD-ROM)
When my 5 year old is playing this game all of her siblings gather around to watch. They really like this game. The concepts are well presented and the learning is fun. I really like that even if they miss and pick the wrong answer the game lets them try again. We have had this game almost a year and my children still love it. It does a great job with addition, counting, colors, recognizing patterns, spelling, sounding out simple words, story ordering and it is just fun.

Buyer beware,

Initially, I thought this was a great product. It kept our son entertained with educational games through two long hot summer afternoons. However, the game is designed so that when you pass level two, it directs you to their website and informs you that if you want to continue, [...] Unfortunately, my son was already excited about earning the "badges" and was upset that he can't earn all of them without a subscription. NO WHERE on the box is this explained to the consumer. On their website, other parents have complained; yet, the company feebly replies that it is sorry if subscription requirements are not made clear. Still, it appears as if it has made NO effort to change their packaging. Considering the initial price combined with a yearly membership is close to $100, I would not have bought this if I would have known my son was going to end up disappointed, and I would end up bamboozled.

Product is misleading,
This review is from: Jumpstart Advanced Kindergarten (CD-ROM)
We recently purchased this program & my 5 year old was immediately engaged and excited. Once she got to level 2 out of about 12 it tells her to "get her parent to log on to jumpstart.com and buy a membership". I'm not interested in a $75 annual membership and clearly feel that she can't get the full benefit of the program I purchased. It would be nice to be able to access the remaining 10 levels without shelling out more $$. We've gone online to use their "free" games to see if this allows her to pass to the next level but that doesn't work either.

Some discs okay - but others are horrible!,
This review is from: Jumpstart Advanced Kindergarten (CD-ROM)
My daughter loves the Animal Field Trip game and the Arts and Crafts game. The Fundamentals game isn't as interesting for her - but it is probably a bit over her head (she is only 3). The Pet Playground game is horrible! There are only 2 games available - you have to play them many times just to buy a pet and then many more times to buy anything more for your pet (such as food, grooming supplies, etc). Plus, several areas of the game are locked out unless you have "Jump Start World" which costs up to $90! There is no warning or infomation on the box that implies that any additional purchases are needed to play the full game. I guess the 3 working discs we received were worth the $15 we paid.

This is a $20 demo. You can only get to level 2 out of 12 before you are directed to a website that wants to rip you off for an additional $8 a month. I am incensed about this. It *does* say on the cover "additional lessons with membership fee" but for $20 I expect to get more than about 4 hours of play out of a game. Very bad business model. Very deceptive packaging as well. Says nothing about only providing two levels of play. I'll never buy anything from these jerks again. And that's too bad because they're the only ones out there with decent computer games for this age group. They really shouldn't need to resort to tricking people. Did I mention being furious!? I hope some other company comes along and puts these weasels out of business.

Jumpstart Brilliance,

My sister was the first in the family to buy all her children all the Jumpstart's. She then recommended it to me for my daughter. This series is brilliant. My daughter is the type of child that will sit on that computer figuring out the game until she wins it. Her thought process as revealed to me is if she completes all the games she will move up to the 2nd Grade level. What more could a parent want? My sister-in-law bought my daughter Learning Rabbit at 2 years of age and she played that one until she was 3. At 3, she bought my daughter the Kindergarten Jumpstart. This month, I bought my daughter the 1st Grade Jumpstart. My daughter is way ahead of the game because she is only 5. These games support her learning in school and keep her uptodate on all her PC skills during the summer break. The program is easy to learn. It does not require a parent to teach the skills.

Mackie's Mom says it's great!,

This was a gift for my now 6 year-old when she was 4. She played it for many hours by herself before showing my 4 year-old how to play. Now it is one of his favorites as well. Because of games like this both of my kids are very skilled in following computer instructions, maneuvreing around a game and utilising fine motor skills to control he mouse. I have never had a bad experience with JumpStart software. We have used JumpStart Baby, Advanced Preschool, Advanced Kindergarten and Animal Adventures.

$20 turns into $75 with no options,

I was very upset with this product. In order to even install the game, you are forced to go to their website and register requiring you give them your email address and childrens names. This name data is fed back to the game to create accounts on the local install.
That's just the start. Turns out that there are really only a couple of small levels on the CD and that to get access to what would normally be a full version of a game, you must sign up for $8 monthly. Characters in the game tell your kids to "get a membership online if you want to go further". Freaking unbelievable.

I purchased this game for my grandson - which he loved, until he found out that he can not progress beyond the 2nd level (of 12) unless a Jumpstart membership is purchased ([...]/month). Big diappointment!!

We've been fans of the jumpstart games for years now as our kids have enjoyed the "edutainment" experience. However, this latest jumpstart "business model" is EVIL!
As others have stated, they only give you the first two levels when you purchase this product for [...]. After that, you are required to purchase an online membership to unlock the other levels. No where is this limitation or "requirement" specified on the box. [...] [...] |
