Children explore three areas of a school (a classroom, a cafeteria and a playground), where they find a variety of playful animations and 15 activities. Clicking on the teacher's desk leads to a report card feature, providing a snapshot look at each child's progress (activities played and percent correct). Our testers loved the program and delighted in the wide range of activities. The multiple difficulty levels are able to successfully hold the interest of most children, and the activities are generally highly engaging. In Serving Up Fractions, children race a timer to fill as many lunch trays possible with just the right amount of food, as requested by a line of students ("1/2 pudding, 1/4 chicken, please"). The more trays filled correctly, the more points earned. Children change the level of difficulty simply by clicking on a level gauge located in the corner of the screen. Points can be used to earn milk caps (or Pogs), which are used in a trivia-style game out on the playground. We had to work for 40 minutes to earn just one cap (there are 30 possible). Other useful activities include the Time Game, which is a board-style game where children practice reading a clock to advance, and a game called Frankie's Dog House, in which kids must follow spoken clues to dig up buried answers to math and reading questions. Our test families felt that the set of short stories with accompanying comprehension questions is limited in design. Sentences, not words, are highlighted, and the quality of the animations are poor compared to a Living Book. Overall, however, this is a very well designed, useful set of activities that make an excellent supplement to any 1st grade curriculum for school or home.

This software is great both my kids love this. The topics of study include: Spelling, Literature, Early Math, Science, Geography, Vocabulary, Music, Reading & Sentences, Art & Creativity, Sequencing & Ordering, Comprehension, Phonics and Letter Sounds.Kids practice reading skills with eight story books which tastefully deal with children from other countries, races and cultures. Painting activities are included. Colors provided are red, yellow, blue, black, and brown. You need to mix the colors to make your secondary colors. Ms. Pickles, the cook, will guide you through fractions when you help serve food in the cafeteria line. The player must learn to make and divide pizza quickly, to serve to the students in the food line. Kids enjoy the silliness of making the correct sized pizza and topping it with worms, flies and mushrooms! Another activity that is great is using coins into the vending machine with Frankie. Cash register practice for the lunch room, you need to add the prices for the foods that the students purchase. The cash register will guide students and confirm that their addition and subtraction are correct. Graphics and Sound: Kids love the encouraging tunes that play from the yellow radio. The radio is musical accompaniment for a field trip to the beach. My daughter found great humor as the shark mistakenly takes a bite out of a rock. She loved to sing his favorite song "Reading is Fun," while she enjoyed his observation of the beach activities. Conclusion: Jump-Start First Grade is outstanding kid's software. Useful as a skill builder and reinforce for children attending school or for home school families. Parents and kids will be glad that Knowledge Adventure created an entire Jump-Start series for children to learn and advance through! The entire grade school in a box is a fantastic idea too. Families that value education will appreciate this set! Each grade level can be purchased separately, or the entire set can be purchased at one time. Feel confident purchasing the entire set at a discount....you will be glad that you did!

I am a huge fan of these video games. They are wonderful tutorials for young children and they make it fun to learn. They are plug and play which means that you put the disc in the computer and you are ready to go. If your child needs tutoring, these games may be the answer for you. My grown children used them and now I have purchased them again for my granddaughter. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
