Book Description

September 1999
Knowledge of the Heart is based on one of the great religious literary discoveries of our time: the finding of the Gnostic Gospels in upper Egypt in 1945. The Gnostics were an early Christian sect who believed that God could only be accessed through gnosis, a revealed knowledge or inner wisdom which streams from a wellspring within each individual.

Arranged in sections representing the eight monastic periods of prayer, each extract is followed by a personal contemplation by the author. This beautifully presented book contains powerful ideas which have particular relevance for our own tunes, and which are expressions of the timeless longing of the human soul to explain the mysteries of existence.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In Knowledge of the Heart, June Singer, the distinguished Jungian analyst turns metaphysical tales into psychological ones. The journey of the Gnostic soul from the godhead to the material world and back becomes a symbol of the journey of the psyche from unconsciousness to consciousness and reconnection to consciousness. In the style for which she is so admired and loved, Singer in turn translates Jungian lingo into heartfelt, everyday language. The Gnostic search for wholeness becomes a model for the universal quest for harmony in all of one's life. No special commitment to Jungian principles is needed to appreciate that message. -- Professor Robert A. Segal, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Lancaster, and Editor or The Gnostic Jung

This review is from: Knowledge of the Heart: Gnostic Secrets of Inner Wisdom (Hardcover)
Let this book give you the sense of allowing the wind to set your course, that is, go on the breath of the Great One, as it is said - in quiet waters, at certain hours of the sun and moon, in the tradition of all who have sailed - clad in monk's clothes, in shimmering veils, in robes rough woven, in shirts rubbed thin on the ropes, faces weathered, and eyes far seeing, of all those who prayed to remember that we are never - not even in the troughs and mountains of the greatest ravaging seas, we are never, ever, abandoned. The Greatest, The Source without source, is riding fo'c'sle, that is, standing up on the topside fore-castle deck near the prow, utterly commanding the course.
