Book Description

March 30, 2007
Since its inception in 1867, Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering has brought vision and practicality to engineering education. Founder Sylvanus Thayer believed that engineers should be grounded in the liberal arts and should practice engineering in the context of society as a whole. This concept remains at the core of engineering at Dartmouth.

Knowledge with Know-How is based on archival materials and extensive interviews with current and former deans, faculty members, and senior administrators. It offers an inside view of the extraordinary community of men and women who made Thayer School both an early innovator in engineering education and, after the midtwentieth century, the site of groundbreaking research in biomedical, biochemical, computer, electrical, materials science, and mechanical engineering.

Published as a companion volume to The First Hundred Years of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, the book summarizes that first century and goes on to trace the School leadership, evolution of courses, degree programs, sponsored research, and corporate partnerships from the 1970s to the present.

The book includes more than 120 photographs drawn from the archives of Thayer School and Dartmouth College.
