    Good quality and workmanship.

It'd be 5 staras except for the goofy fit--with sleeves too long and tight, shoulders too wide, and body too loose.

I ordered a Large and an XL for my son not knowing how the sizing would run.

I recommend the "Knox Armory" brand MA-1 jackets. They are made by Alpha (maker of the military issue MA-1 jacket), but cut to "civilian" specs so they will size like any other off-the-rack jackets.

The Knox brands are not certified to 20-deg temps like the military-spec Alpha, but are still quite comfortable from mid-30 to mid-60 degree temps. This is mainly due to Alpha's use of a slightly less durable, thinner nylon. The Knox brands are also sewn to the same military specs as their Alpha brothers, so you're NOT buying a "cheap" copy; you are buying an Alpha made with non-military-spec materials (nylon outer shell). At half the price of an Alpha, the Knox is a no-brainer alternative to an Alpha. Overall, both are great jackets.

Pricing on Amazon may be a bit higher than other online retailers (military surplus, Sportsmans Guide, etc.), but with super-saver shipping, the cost is about the same.

One thing to remember with Knox or the original Alpha: They are Dry Clean ONLY! In a pinch, you can wash them alone, on a gentle cycle, but you will run the risk of eventually bursting the shoulder seams and causing the poly-fill to separate and "bunch-up".

Very impressed with this jacket in terms of value for money. It is not an Alpha Industries MA-1, but then you are not paying that price. But for under 40 dollars it really is a great jacket. I am 6'1" and 185 pounds and found the Large to be too big for me as the arms were too long and bunched up, pushing the shoulders up and making my shoulders look like a football player. I returned it for a Medium which fits just great.

I own an old Alpha Industries flight jacket that is great, and I ordered this thinking it was the same thing. I was disappointed to find that it is very stiff and crinkles loudly like a plastic tarp, unlike my other, softer one. I also noticed this Knox Armory version is not on the Alpha Industry's site. The MA-1 jackets on the Alpha Industry's site list for at least $110, so maybe that's a higher quality fabric?

Also, the color was way off. I thought I was getting a gray color (titanium) but it actually looks light green. It's what I ordered, as it says titanium on the tag, but the color is not the same as depicted on amazon. See the user photo I posted.

On the upside, it fits me well, and seems warm and weather-proof. And Alpha Industries is willing to take it back by sending me a shipping label. They said if I want a refund, they'll refund me purchase price minus a $10 fee. I'm thinking of exchanging it for the pricier one from their site, then there won't be a fee.

I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned the stiff, plasticky material. It's that bad.

Update: I exchanged this for a REAL Alpha Industries MA-1 jacket. THAT is a quality jacket for only about 100 bucks. I got a large, which is a little snug, but I'm keeping it. It's way better than the fabric of this jacket I've reviewed.

My son wanted this jacket for a Christmas gift. He found it at amazon and we ordered it. The jacket was delivered on-time and exactly as stated...just exactly what my son was looking for. No problems so far. I will admit, he is taking very good care of his precious jacket. :-) I would recommend Alpha Industries as a reliable source, and this jacket as it is described. Thanks Alpha Industries for the good deal!

I have a 41.5 inch circumference chest. I just measured it. I usually take a size 42 sport jacket. Moreover, I have broad shoulders and long arms. Nevertheless, the Knox Armory MA-1 flight jacket in a men's large swims on me! It feels like an XL or even an XXL. These do not run small; they run big--very big! I'm going to try a medium and will revise this review if necessary.

[Follow-up after exchange.] The medium size fits pretty well in shoulder width and arm length. The chest is still a bit roomy for me, however, and the bottom of the coat is very loose around my 34 inch waist/hip--though the elastic waist band makes up somewhat for this. In all fairness, I should point out that my body type (see above)is hard to fit off the rack.

Sizing issues aside, though, this MA-1 style jacket is bargain-priced. The mil-spec ones are tougher, but they also cost much more. The KA piece is a good value for this type of jacket.

BTW, I bought my first, too-big jacket from Sportsman's Guide. The cost + shipping there was a few dollars less, but it took 9 calendar days to get here. This order--through Amazon--was much faster: 4 days, inclusive, from order to doorstep.

I'll do one more follow-up review up when I get a chance to field test this garment. (Temps in Virginia have been in the high 70's and low 80's recently!)

Update: I've had the jacket now for just under a year, and I love it. It turns out it is both wind-proof and water-repellent--though still don't know if it is waterproof, as I haven't worn it in a soaking downpour. I love the little sleeve pocket, which is where my cell phone lives now. It'd be 5 staras except for the goofy fit--with sleeves too long and tight, shoulders too wide, and body too loose. Also this style has no collar and a wide neck--so you need a scarf in cold weather. Still, it is feather-light and so useful, I've barely been out of it all winter.
