This edition of the most significant political writings of the sixteenth-century Protestant reformer John Knox presents accurate but accessible versions of all of his writings on the theme of rebellion, including his notorious First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women, and provides students and scholars alike with the means of tracing the evolution of his political radicalism and evaluating its impact. The first comprehensive edition of Knox's political writings, it sheds important new light on the political and religious thought of the Reformation period.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Roger Mason has provided an excellent and useful edition of four of John Knox's 1558 tracts....In keeping with earlier volumes in this Cambridge series, Mason has modernized the spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing besides providing a useful glossary, all of which make the works accessible to students without sacrificing scholarly integrity." Richard Greaves, Church History

"...presents the best collection of this great Scot Reformer's political writings." Christian Sociologist Newsletter

5.0 out of 5 stars Biblical Obedience, May 11, 2009

This review is from: Knox: On Rebellion (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought) (Paperback)
Knox was truly a master per 1 Peter 3:15 at disputing the pretensions of would-be tyrants - always citing Old Testament scriptural examples to prove his point. He laid an excellent foundation of arguments for those who would follow, such as Rutherford and Witherspoon. His warning to those Christians who pursue a 'listless obedience' of complicity in Ezekiel 22:25-31 is powerful. This selection provides the reader with an understanding of how "Rebellion to tyrants" can be "Obedience to God."
