Like its predecessors by author Jack Neely, "Knoxville: This Obscure, Prismatic City" features a collection of fast-paced stories about the history of Knoxville, the gateway to the Smoky Mountains which has undergone its own urban revival in recent years.
This book can be enjoyed by reading it straight through or by browsing, flipping randomly to any of the individual stories. Neely's style at times is similar to the writer O.Henry in that many of the pieces read like a short story with an unexpected twist at the end. Unlike so many local histories which are either overly dry or seem too much like the work of local tourism boards, the book features strong character development and plots. Some unsavory characters appear who do not necessarily put Knoxville in the best light but the pride felt by people who lived in the city over the last two centuries or more comes through, despite the occasional setbacks they experienced. Tension over race relations and segregationists in the 1950s, Knoxville's connections to Hank Williams, Sr., and his tragic, last days which played out in the city, and a short-lived, cable-car operation in 1894 which was suspended over the Tennessee River are just a few of the diverse topics. Rare photos and drawings help set the scene.
