I have very recently aquaried a Genesis 32X and have been enjoying it. My first game was the less-than-stellar Cosmic Carnage, but then my mother had informed me that Knuckles Chaotix had been ordered. It came, and I was overwhelmed with excitement. It was better than I had imagined.

Story: 6.8/10

Its got a special twist to the story, but a minor one. Most of its' just rehashes from the previous games in the series, but with some minor differences. The Chaos Rings (how creative Sonic Team, where'd you come up with that one?) serve as the Chaos Emeralds in the game, but rarely go noticed. There really is little to say about it, but if I do find out more about the story (I don't have the booklet with me as I write this), you can always find it on my website by searching for Zike the Fox on Google. From what I remember, I wasn't too terribly impressed.


Graphics: 8.7/10

They certainly exceed all the Genesis Sonics', thats for sure. Possibly excluding 3D Blast. Sprites are decorated wonderfully and beatifully, most of the animation is done well, excluding Mighty, however. Mighty is Sonic from Sonic 1's sprite. Infact, Mighty probably was Sonic at one point. The intro was pretty nice, but the only problem with it as far as I can tell, was the framerate issue, If you had over 20 rings while playing and got hit, the game would go to a massive slowdown. Another spectacular feat graphic-wise in the game was the above-average special stage. It looked AMAZING. Running trough a completely polygonal tube, braving massive leaps, springs that shoot you straight up in the air, its one of the best special stages I've seen in a Sonic game ever. Not to say that the only bit of 3D. Some of the bosses in the game use the graphical capabilities of the 32X as well. All in all, the game looks fantastic, and its one of the better 32X games to woo your friends (but chances are they could care less).


Gameplay: 8.8/10

Great. Its an all-around fun game. As you should know, the characters are joined together with a ring that works the same as a rubber band. Plenty of gameplay stratigies revolve around it, some of which I've found out without being explained in game. I will now go into description of what can be done with this "rubber band". First of all, the most basic function is to speed the two of the characters up, but this can be done in more ways than one. Whilst holding the B button, your partner will stay in that exact same spot and will allow you to swing around at first it may seem pretty useless, but you must first realize its potential. First of all, if you run straight ahead you get a very minimal speed boost, but there is a very special trick. Run the opposite way you would normally want too, but when you charge the band completely, let go of the run button, run in the desired direction, let go of B, and you'll go swinging at full speed. Another trick is throwing your partner up to the top of the screen, hold the B button, and he'll pull you up in the air, making a quicker ascention. Its a game that takes lots of quick thinking in getting the job done, because the spin dash is horrendous in this game. I will now explain the characters. Knuckles, the main hero, is, unfortunatly, one of the worst charcters. He would be good if he could climb walls faster, and he's the slowest character in the game. Well, maybe. Vector may be slower. Speaking of Vector, he's the alligator from Sonic Heroes who originally appeared in this game. He's a lot like Knuckles in the sense that he can climb walls as well, except he does a fast and powerful dash before climbing, and you have to hold C in order to continue climbing. Next is Espio, who is one of the more useful characters. Instead of climbing, he, being a chameleon, actually STICKS to the walls, allowing him to run on the sides of walls and CEILINGS. Very useful, but his tornado appears to be slower spinning, but considering how rare it is that your actually going to need to spin, its not much of a difference. Mighty comes next, which is my personal favorite in the game. He's like Knuckles, 'cept he's the fastest character in the game, and instead of climbing, he does a wall kick, which sends him ascending of descending, depending on the corresponding direction being held on the D-Pad. Charmy is the last special character, and is the most special in every sense of the word. He can't spin, but this has been replaced with a unique flying ability, and his attack is stinging in mid-air. He has moderate speed. The last two, Heavy and Bomb, can only serve as your partner (unless your using level select), and have no special abilites, other than slow movement. Every character is unique from each other, and most are fun to use.


Controls: 6.8/10

Fair. Quite slippery, and hard to learn, even for a Sonic expert. Certainly the hardest to control of the 2D games, and the hardest Sonic in the 32-bit generation. Its the worst aspect of the game, and could have probably been improved slightly.


Overall: 8.7/10

Its among my favorite 2D Sonic's. Thats saying quite a bit. Its the main reason anyone should get a 32X, as if there was any other reason at all. All in all, casual gamers, forget this. Completely. Hard-core gamers or collectors, get this as soon as you can. Its rare, hard to come by, and actually fun. Enjoy, buyers. Search for Zike the Fox on Google to find more of these reviews.

I have played this game and beat it. If you like Sonic games, it is a good game. Sometimes the game gets annoying because you play as two characters that are connected through some kinda magic/weirdo connected rings. I remember playing as the robot characters were fun for some reason... but than again I haven't played this game since 10 or more years ago.

The other review wondered what a 32X is... well it was a "game system" that plugged into the top of a Sega Genesis. The 32X looks T-shaped. It was supposed to have better graphics (32 bit) capability and a series of games out for it. There might be a little over twenty games that came out for the system because it didnt sell well.

Anyhow I give it 4 out of 5 because it's a good game, but I think you have to enjoy the Sonic games for this one. The first time you play it, the game is not what you would expect. The game and storyline has the Sonic-story-style (kind of like Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles), but a little different twist cuz of the two character playing style and stuff.

I'm aware that the 32x as a whole isn't good. In fact, I couldn't disagree too well if someone said it downright sucks. The only reasons to own a 32x is for collector's purposes, and FOR THIS GAME.

Knuckles Chaotix has all the familiar feels and fun of the Genesis Sonic games, plus some new innovations. The graphics, while not a huge step up, are noticeably better.
Overall, very fun for such an obscure game, and it even has a save feature to pick up right where you left off. The ring-chain thing takes some time to get used to, but it's interesting once you do.

Each character has their own unique abilities, such as Knuckles' glide or Espio's camouflage. A good buy for collector's, and fun.
