From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-As the son of an NBA star, Bryant grew up surrounded by some of the game's best players, who gave him advice and practiced with him. In 1996, he became one of a handful of athletes to skip college for the pros. Stewart does an admirable job of giving the highlights of his first three seasons in the NBA, including some of the young man's frustrations and errors in judgment. In 1998, Bryant was the youngest player in league history to start in the All-Star Game. He was benched for the final quarter after hogging the ball and showing disrespect for his veteran teammates. Even with these signs of immaturity, Bryant's philosophy for success (in basketball and life) is impressive: "You have to work hard. You have to continue to stay aggressive, regardless of what people say and do. You have to continue to be yourself." With attractive full-color photos throughout, this title is a solid addition for most libraries.
