Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

With the Kodak EasyShare DX6490, you can get ultra-close to your subject with its 10x optical zoom. Fully loaded with advanced features, the EasyShare DX6490 also offers a 4-megapixel resolution, extra-large 2.2-inch LCD, and a mix of automatic and manual controls.

Optics and Resolution
Thanks to the Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon optics and Kodak's intelligent color science image processing chip, the EasyShare DX6490 delivers in-depth detail and stunning colors. The DX6490 features a 4-megapixel resolution for 2304 x 1728 pixel images for photo-quality 11 x 14 enlargements. Other resolution modes include 1656 x 1242, 1200 x 900, and 640 x 480. The 10x ultra-zoom lens is equivalent to a 38-380mm lens in 35mm photography. With the 3x advanced digital zoom, you can achieve a total 30x zoom.

The DX6490 introduces the new Kodak Color Science Image Processing Chip, which instantly analyzes your image each time you press the shutter. The result is sharp, consistent, lifelike colors that jump off the page.

Movie Mode
In addition to capturing still images, the EasyShare DX6490 can also shoot 320 x 240 pixel video with sound at 20 frames per second. Your video length is limited only by the size of your memory card. Note that the optical zoom cannot be used while shooting video.

More Features
Review your photos using the 2.2-inch high-resolution indoor/outdoor LCD screen on the back of the DX6490, which enables you to see your images even in direct sunlight. The camera also includes a high-resolution electronic viewfinder that displays images just as the camera sees them. You can view all menus and settings directly via the viewfinder.

The DX6490 makes it easy to snap photos in automatic mode, but it also offers a multitude of manual controls. The manual control dial lets you adjust aperture, exposure compensation, ISO equivalents (80 to 800), focus-zone format, and exposure metering. For automatic shooting, the DX6490 includes several scene modes, including night, sport (captures action without blurring), landscape (ensures maximum sharpness for distant scenes), portrait, and close-up modes.

The Share button on the back of the EasyShare DX6490 enables you to tag pictures right on the camera for automatic printing or e-mailing, after transferring to your PC. You can even store up to 32 e-mail addresses in the camera.

Other features include:

  • Built-in flash with auto, red-eye reduction, and off; external flash synchronization is available
  • High-speed, low-light autofocus with selectable modes (multi-zone, center-zone)
  • White balance modes: auto, daylight, tungsten, fluorescent
  • Shutter speed: 16 seconds to 1/1700 second
  • Color modes: color, black and white, sepia, saturated, neutral, sharpness
  • Macro (close-up) mode: 4.7 inches
  • Burst mode: 3 frames per second, up to 6 images
  • 10-second self timer
Included Camera Dock 6000
The EasyShare DX6490 includes the Kodak EasyShare Dock 6000, which features a USB port for fast and easy transfer of pictures from camera to computer as well as a two-position tilt feature for improved viewing of images from the camera's LCD. It also comes with a rechargeable battery pack, and the Kodak DX6490 can be stored in the dock any time so that it will always be charged and ready to go.

The optional Printer Dock 6000 adds the ability to print 4-by-6-inch photos directly from your camera. You can also hook it up to your TV for a slide-show presentation.

Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored using the internal 16 MB memory or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards. The internal 16 MB memory will store approximately 10 images at the DX6490's highest setting (2304 x 1728), or 18 2-megapixel images. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via ultrafast USB 2.0, which means it can be connected to any USB-compatible Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software. When used with USB 1.1 connection, transfer will slow to USB 1.1 rate.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (Kodak KLIC 5000 or KLIC 5001), which can be charged via the included AC adapter. It measures 3.9 by 3.1 by 3.2 inches and weighs 11.9 ounces (excluding batteries and media).

What's In The Box
This package includes the Kodak EasyShare DX6490 digital camera, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, 5-volt AC adapter, USB and A/V cables, neck strap, lens cap with tether, and custom camera insert for Kodak EasyShare 6000 series camera and printer docks. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, October 17, 2003
By
B. Bhamra (MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Kodak EasyShare DX6490 4MP Digital Camera w/ 10x Optical Zoom and Camera Dock (Electronics)
This is my second Kodak camera, my old camera had only 3x Optical Zoom, but I was looking for bigger zoom, therefore, (...)

The Kodak DX6490 really surprised me on many fronts, with a 4-megapixel CCD, a high-quality Schneider-Kreuznach 10x optical zoom lens with much lower than average distortion, a capable autofocus system that works down to very low light levels, and an electronic viewfinder system that likewise works very well in dim lighting. Its exposure system spans a range of control from fully automatic to fully manual, and an external flash sync connector permits use with external flash units.

According to me with the four-megapixel, 10x-zoom DX6490 though, Kodak takes a large step toward bringing their excellent color technology to the "enthusiast" market. Even in light of the large lens this is a compact camera, the DX6490 has an overall body design similar to a number of other long-zoom digicams on the market, with a generous handgrip on the right-hand side, balancing the large lens on the left. It definitely won't fit into your shirt pocket, but the DX6490 is small enough for larger coat pockets, purses, backpacks, etc., and comes with a neck strap and rechargeable batter and dock.

Pro's:--
Great photo quality and excellent colors
10X optical zoom lens
Large, high resolution LCD
Electronic viewfinder actually useable in low light
Many manual controls
Flash sync port for external flash
Hybrid AF system for low light focusing
Very easy to use
EasyShare system makes it very easy to share and print photos
Nice playback and movie modes

4.0 out of 5 stars Great camera with terrific zoom, October 26, 2003
By
This review is from: Kodak EasyShare DX6490 4MP Digital Camera w/ 10x Optical Zoom and Camera Dock (Electronics)
This is a great camera and my second digital/Kodak camera. I orginally owned the Kodak DC4800 3.1 megapixel with 3x zoom, it was and is still a good camera. But I found I needed something to get those close-up shots I was missing, well I found it. The setup is really easy. Load the software (remember load it first before you do anything else) onto your computer (I still run Windows with ME) just let the camera charge for while and your ready to take pictures. The manual and software guide you through everything. The camera is very intuitive and extremely easy to operate. Everything is conveniently located. The extra megapixels and zoom make taking nature shots a real joy. There are a few cons, such as I agree the picture quality is not quite as sharp as it could be, but it's still great for a 4.23 megapixel (of course the higher the megapixels the sharper the image)

Pros

Fantastic zoom and close-up lens
Great Auto-Focus and shoot
Easy setup on computer
Camera controls very easy to use and intuitive
Light, small size makes it very easy to hold and take pictures

Cons

Picture not quite as sharp
internal memory not enough (that's ok you have to buy memory cards for all digital cameras)

I gave the camera 4 stars because of pictures not quite so sharp as maybe it could be. There is always room for improvement but I will be hard press to find fault with this great little camera and I recommend it to anyone

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprise contender., November 26, 2003
This review is from: Kodak EasyShare DX6490 4MP Digital Camera w/ 10x Optical Zoom and Camera Dock (Electronics)
Pluses:

Fantastic OS X support (the EasyShare software is very iPhoto like in execution).

Huge LCD and a wonderful Electronic Viewfinder (with excellent low-light capabilities for framing shots that would otherwise be impossible with other cameras).

The easiest learning curve I've ever seen for a digital camera in this price range.

A thorugh and easy to follow instruction manual.

A top-notch german lens and 10x optical zoom.

Acceptable video recording.

Hot shoe for an outboard flash.

Minuses:

Lack of manual focus control.

Lack of TIFF support (camera is JPG only, but this probably won't matter to 99% of the users who buy this product).

A little small for my hands (o.k., though I'm a big guy, I might be reaching on this one).

Conclusion:

I was prepared to buy an Olympus 740/750 Camedia, but, after looking over the DX6490, I was sold on the Kodak's simple design and thoughtful control layout.

This model is for the person looking for the easiest digital camera to use in its price range. A great camera for my wife, who doesn't know enough about photography to miss the manual focus, but still a great camera for me- as it offers enough control over shutter speeds and aperture for tough shots.

If power + ease of use is the right combination for you, you owe it to yourself to check this camera out. That said, shy away from the Canon A60/A70 series- they are hard to figure out, comparatively, plus their manuals might as well be written in Greek.
