In order for Kodak to get you to spend money on ink cartridges, they designed this printer to draw ink from the color cartridge (gray and a clear) in order to print something in just black. Therefore, if you run out of color ink you cannot print something in just black ink even if you have a full black ink cartridge.

I have been most happy with HP printers, but I purchased this as a third printer, mainly to be used for printing web pages or things where quality isn't critical. It's a good thing I was't worried about quality b/c this printer definitely lacks it. It's a bit noisey, which doesn't really bother me, but the poor quality even bothers my 12 year old. The MOST frustrating thing is the exclusive deals for selling ink. Be aware...if you run out of ink, you can't just run to town or to the closest store selling ink. You have to be organized enough to always have a spare on hand. Yes, the ink is a little cheaper, but in my opinion it is offset by the lack of quality and ink frustration.

This printer has turned out to be a very good investment. Bought it cheaper on Amazon than in the stores. The ink refill are much cheaper for this brand than any other.
