5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a truly archival digital printer
Great color, without that over the top over saturated color one gets with inkjets; waterproof, tear - resistant...Only recommendation I would make is that you download the newest drivers from the Kodak website instead of using the enclosed CD, and that you send your images to the 1400 about 10% lesser density than you like on your screen, in order to get the best result.

1.0 out of 5 stars Works good for a short time
This printer was good for two months, then the paper started to mis-align in the printer. If you search the net, you will find this is a common problem with this model. The prints are excellent - professional quality, but be aware that it has a known issue that there doesn't seem to be a fix for. With the price for each paper replacement near $90, the price per print is...

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic photos, October 2, 2005

Incredible prints, easy to set up and get printing, (if you have a fork lift ;) it is a bit heavy and its big), but the pictures you get from this printer can't be beat. The only thing that I dont like, other than its heft and size, is that the cost per print is just a bit to high. But after I printed and saw my first 8x10 I had to give it 5 stars. If you want prints that last, look great and have a big desk, you will love this printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Awesome printer!!!, August 23, 2005
This review is from: Kodak PRO 1400 Photo Printer (Office Product)
I've owned a few top of the line ink jets but this Kodak sub-dye printer is just plain awesome. If you need professional photos, this is the printer to get. It's fast, quiet and produces a print that is smooth with a lot of color and contrast. Shadow detail is breath taking and it is also easy to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT PHOTO PRINTER!, May 16, 2006
This review is from: Kodak PRO 1400 Photo Printer (Office Product)
This printer replaced my old Epson 1270 and it is a much better printer for several reasons.

1. The Kodak prints are much more real looking and have way better shadow depth. The colors are great. Vibrant.

2. With the inkjet if I went a couple weeks without making any prints the heads would clog leaving a mess on the first print or two. Even with head cleaning I still had this problem. The Kodak NEVER has this issue.

3. The Kodak is much easier to control the color match as to what I see on the monitor. There is very little fussing around with color profiles, which was always an issue with the inkjet.

4. The fading problem with the inkjet was a real headache for me. The Kodak has a transparent layer over the top to resist fading and also repel water and finger prints.

5. I was always replacing the color cartridge on the Epson. It didnt hold enough ink for what they were charging in my opinion. With the Kodak, the expense per print seems to be less although I can not confirm this.

I now have a laser printer for documents and the Kodak 1400 for pictures. I dont ever plan on going back to the inkjet way of printing.

This is a very well made "professional" Photo Printer.

I've had this printer for about a year, having purchased it for $340 including a rebate that Kodak occasionally offers on the product. I use it with a G5 PPC Mac. Over the course of the year, Kodak has upgraded the firmware several times. One of the firmware upgrades left the printer unable to feed paper without manual assistance, but the latest upgrade solved that problem.

Let's get one thing out of the way: there is no comparison between this and inkjet printers, at least not any that are even close to this price point. Low end inkjet printers produce flat-looking photos that often fade with light exposure. Inkjets often jam up with one color or another if you don't print from them quite regularly. I use a laserprinter for my regular output, so my old inkjet was used only for photo output. If I went too long - say a week or two - I had to run several cleaning cycles, then hope for the best. These are not problems with the Kodak. Here, you get beautiful depth that rivals professional Kodak processed prints.

Yes, it's heavy, it's noisy, and it takes up a lot of space. All true. But the photos look like photos, not something your kid printed at school. Yes, the paper is expensive, but again you get what you pay for. The setup is straightforward, hookup via USB works without difficulty, and print time is very fast. It starts printing almost immediately after you hit the print button, so there's very little processing time. In about a minute or so, you have your first page. The accompanying Kodak software works well, and iPhoto will also interface with the 1400 if that is your preference. I'm sure there are many other choices that I haven't explored.

The 4 stars rather than 5 are not about photo quality but rather are the result of the occasional paper misfeed (which Kodak seems to have solved in firmware), the high cost relative to alternatives, and the noise.

With the price for each paper replacement near $90, the price per print is now prohibitive compared to what you can get with inkjet.

Unfortunately, if you're looking for an inexpensive dye sub printer, this just isn't reliable enough to justify the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, March 27, 2007

This review is from: Kodak PRO 1400 Photo Printer (Office Product)
I've printed about 20 8x12" glossy photo's on the Kodak Pro 1400 Photo Printer the first two days that I had it. From a couple of neutral tone wedding picture to vivid color landscapes (Keukenhof Tulip Gardens). I would consider myself an advanced amateur photographer and the prints from this printer rival those from the independent photo shops but at 1/5 the cost, and better than your local drugstore.

Dust is an issue, as clearly stated in the manual. The first two prints came out with some dust defects, but resolved itself. I now leave the printer in my office, covered with a bed sheet when not in use. Kodak say's the printer is portable, but at ~30 lb. it's not something your going to want to cary too far from your car. The minor issue is network-ability. I would not get the printer work with a USB print server. After hours of trying on both my Mac and PC I gave up and bought a new Airport Extreme. Connected the this printer and two other printers to a USB hub, the USB hub to the Airport Extreme base station and it's all good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very durable prints - Waterproof!, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Kodak PRO 1400 Photo Printer (Office Product)
I use this printer because I need high quality prints that don't easily scratch and are water proof. I sell photo cutouts where I apply the print to acrylic plastic then using a scroll saw cut away the background. The photo paper from this printer is fantastic! It doesn't easily scratch and the cut edges don't fuzz. The image quality is excellent!

I have been a photographer for over thirty years. The 1400 makes prints which rival the quality of a pro lab. I used to spend $25+. and wait a week for quality I now have available at the press of a button. I hope Kodak does well with this printer as I will be a customer for a very long time. Thanks Kodak. The 1400 makes me feel all warm and fuzzy :-) And the price????? Incredible deal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Plan to get one more, April 2, 2007
This review is from: Kodak PRO 1400 Photo Printer (Office Product)
This Printer is a Pro photographers dream come true. This is dye sub number four me. It replaces a printer from a company whose beautiful dye sub 8x10 prints are long lasting but the printer was so unreliable that I would spend half a day trying to get print number two. 8x10 and 5x7 prints are very important for my business. The color and finish that comes from the 1400 printer are mind boggling. I print from a G5 dual 2.7. My system is calibrated so I am able to get WYSIWYG on the first print. I keep a dust free computer room, absolutely necessary for clean prints. I use the 1400 regularly. It has been totally trouble free. I wish Kodak would create this machine to make 11x14 prints. I would be the first in line. I downloaded new firmware and drivers this week. Kodak keep up the good work. We need you. As for size the 1400's footprint is smaller than my Epson 2200. I plan to purchase one more 1400. Why? I am busy.
