This is one of the finest recordings and performances of these Kodaly selections. The recording itself is absolutely clear and dramatic and despite being recorded in 1982 is one of the first full DDD digital recording and compares well with the lastest technology. The full range of nuances and dynamics and the musical interpretation are absolutely in keeping with the style of the ethnic origins of the music within the formal symphonic medium. One can relate this to Bartok's use of Hungarian folk music from the various regions.

The Budapest Philharmonic is a major symphony orchestra not only in toto but also the individual soloists and the conductor's interpretation make it unique. Almost in a sense that there are certain interpretive ideas that I feel could be done only by a Hungarian orchestra with a Hungarian conductor of the caliber of Arpad Joo and the great Budapest Philharmonic.

I write this review with the background of having been first violinist in the NBC Symphony under Toscanini and also having been born in Hungary.
