Editorial Reviews

In the chamber works recorded here, spanning Kodaly's career, we can hear an unwavering desire to place genuine Hungarian folk music (rather than the 'style hongrois' espoused by the Strauss family and many other composers) within classical music traditions. Bartok wrote of his compatriot, ''If I were to name the composer whose works are the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit, I would answer, Kodaly.'' The Dante Quartet, winners of the BBC Music Magazine Award for their album of Franck and Faure, respond to this music with dancing energy and folkloric simplicity.

Nineteenth century Viennese musicians thought they knew what Gypsy and Hungarian music sounded like, but however well-formed the "style hongrois" was in the erudite hands of Liszt, Joachim and Brahms, it was still a poor imitation of the real thing, whose familiarity we owe mainly to the ethnographic and musical efforts of Bartók and Kodály. Bartók's significance in music history is well-established of course, whereas his friend, contemporary and compatriot Kodály is attached to him as a kind of minor sibling, noted in North America as an important pedagogue responsible for what we call the Kodály Method (popularized by Close Encounters of the Third Kind and still influential in music education circles) and as the composer of a handful of colorful, folkloristic orchestral works such as Dances of Galánta, the Háry János Suite and the Peacock Variations (all from the 1920s and 1930s). Works like the 1923 Psalmus Hungaricus have made some inroads with amateur choruses, but his operas, choral and chamber music are pretty much unknown over here. Thus I was happy to sample this offering from the Dante Quartet that delivers his extent music for string quartet.

The String Quartet No. 1 from 1908-9 may disappoint you if you're expecting the sound world of his more familiar pieces. Indeed it sounds more French than Hungarian except for the brief third movement, which lets its hair down a bit rhythmically. Its harmonic language and form are both pretty ensconced in the 19th Century. The first movement begins in C minor with a slow introduction that's followed by a conventional sonata-allegro.
