5.0 out of 5 stars an underrated album ~~ BRAVO, BILLY JOEL !!!
"Billy Joel Concert (Kohuept)"is an undervalued album and I'm not sure why; he gives his all at this 1987 concert during his "Bridge Tour" and he has some great musicians onstage with him! Billy's band includes Liberty DeVitto on drums; Doug Stegmeyer on bass; Dave Lebolt on keyboards/synthesizer; Russell Javors on both acoustic and electric guitar; Mark Rivera on...

"Billy Joel Concert (Kohuept)"is an undervalued album and I'm not sure why; he gives his all at this 1987 concert during his "Bridge Tour" and he has some great musicians onstage with him! Billy's band includes Liberty DeVitto on drums; Doug Stegmeyer on bass; Dave Lebolt on keyboards/synthesizer; Russell Javors on both acoustic and electric guitar; Mark Rivera on saxophone and Kevin Dukes on electric guitar. Peter Hewlett and George Simms provide background vocals. In addition, the liner notes have some great color photos of Billy onstage--and more! The quality of the sound is quite good; and I like the artwork.

As another reviewer notes, the crowd does seem to become gradually more enthusiastic as the concert progresses; I agree that the former U.S.S.R. police wouldn't have liked it if Joel's fans had been *too* happy about an American performing there during what was still the "Cold War."

Billy and his band perform a great set of songs and the fact that the crowd did warm up after a few beginning numbers shows they really did enjoy his show and that he had a good rapport with his audience. There aren't any bad tracks on this album, either! After the concert begins with the Russian song "Odoya" performed by The Georgian Singers "ZHOURNALIST" of the former U.S.S.R., Billy and the band begin to make magic with some really awesome songs including "Prelude/Angry Young Man" with Joel's piano and singing skill right up front; the poignant "Honesty" which I always liked; "Goodnight Saigon;" "Stiletto;" "Big Man on Mulberry Street;" a terrific rendition of "Baby Grand" which Joel had previously recorded with Ray Charles; "An Innocent Man" that takes some extra time for electrifying improvisation; a very good treatment of "Allentown;" "A Matter of Trust;" "Only the Good Die Young;" "Sometimes a Fantasy;" "Uptown Girl;" "Big Shot;" a crowd pleasing rendition of The Beatles' "Back in the U.S.S.R." and then the ending number, Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'" which probably didn't thrill the old Soviet guard too much but Billy Joel got to sing it anyway and the audience loved it!

This CD is a must-have for any Billy Joel fan; he did a great job with this concert. Joel was one of the few American artists allowed to perform in the former Soviet Union and this live recording documents the concert well.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Billy's Most Exciting Concerts, December 4, 2011

This concert is great not only because it captures Billy while he was still in his prime (taped during the 1987 "Bridge" tour) but also because it was performed in front of a Russian audience. This was still technically the "Cold War" era so for an American artist to be allowed to come to Mother Russia & get their citizens all riled up was quite something for that time. You'd never know it from the recording but I recently read that most of the audience took a long while to warm up to Joel's energetic show, something that never had happened in other countries he had performed in, becuz each time the fans were hit with the bright lights, anybody who seemed to be enjoying themselves froze. In addition, people who were "overreacting" were removed by security. Gotta luv those uptight gov'ts right? LOL Anyway, Billy let the authorities know he wasn't happy about what they were doing behind the scenes & apparently they backed off a bit. It's also been estimated that Joel lost more than $1 million of his own money on the trip and concerts. But he has said the goodwill he was shown there was well worth the financial loss.

Anyway, Billy & his band put on an Amazing show & you'd never know that anything was out of the ordinary while listening to this amazing recording or watching the video cuz the fans always seemed to be incredibly enthusiastic. Even more so than American audiences.

My fav tracks here are Billy's classics: Angry Young Man, Honesty, Allentown, Sometimes a Fantasy, Matter of Trust and his awesome & "very fitting" remake of the Beatles classic: Back in the U.S.S.R. I also enjoyed the Russian acapella song called "Odoya" which starts off the show. I have no idea what they are singing about but it is very catchy & even kind of humorous.

This recording has also been remastered recently & is a definite sonic upgrade to the original release.

This was one of Billy's tightest & most energetic concerts ever & if you are a fan of his 80's hits, this is one you definitely shouldn't miss.

This cd is solid if you appreciate live performances. I like Good Night Saigon, Honesty, and An Innocent Man to name a few. Kind of interesting with it being a concert in Russia back in the 80's. Use to have the tape 25 plus years ago. If you really like Billy Joel you will like this cd. If your looking for a first time purchase of one of his cd's you might be better off with a greatest hits cd.

Billy.Mr. Joel, put true feeling into his visit to Russia. He put his true self on the Russian stage, to people who didn't understand him, as if he were playing in his Allentown!!

This album never received the acclaim it should have. The only thing I didn't like was the download into the Cloud Player did not keep the songs in the original album order.
