Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Rows and rows of Kokeshi dolls greet young readers, inviting close scrutiny of clothing, textile design, and apartment balconies to spot small items such as ladybugs and to identify patterns of dress. In the first opening spread, for instance, dolls in school uniforms are mixed among those in kimonos. Where are the students? Despite the slight whiff of Hello Kitty, the art is inviting and some pictures are challenging. Originally published in France, not Japan, the package does introduce Japanese words and characters but provides no pronunciation guide, nor does it offer information on Kokeshi dolls as a traditional art item. With flaps, die cuts, and a gatefold, the focus is on novelty, not culture, but it is attractive. Grades 3-6. --Linda Perkins

5.0 out of 5 stars For girls who like cute! February 14, 2012
Format:Hardcover
A delightful showcasing of Japanese Kokeshi dolls in kimonos-- it's like playing dolls in a book! Each of several of these little dolls introduces themselves in Japanese: Konnichiwa/Good Afternoon. It's "I Spy" of the Japanese Kimono fashion world, along with hairstyles, sashes, bows and even men's and boy's clothing styles. Japanese characters highlight, along with English, days of the week, clothing accessories, picture symbols (rabbit, fan, socks, chop sticks). All the dolls are named, and customs such as bathing and apartment living are revealed, to make this a beautiful, fun and highly attractive way to introduce Japanese culture. Lift-the-flap pages for this sturdy seek-and-find book add to its charm. An adorable gift for kids who like cute, it also enhances multicultural selections for a classroom or public library.

You can tell a lot of care and thought was put into making this book. I bought one and was so pleasantly surprised with the quality and cuteness of the book that I went back to purchase all of them. Definitely worth it!

This book captivates people of all ages. I'm 29 and bought them for myself because they're so amazing. ^___^

What I love:
-Adorable drawings, one of the cutest books I've ever seen
-Very good quality book, colorful solid prints
-The interactive elements are witty and fun

I'll love anything using these prints. I hope she makes a line if t-shirts, baby clothing, or bags. :)
