Missed the mark for us,
By Eliza (Maine, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kokology : The Game of Self-Discovery (Paperback)
I bought this book as something fun and interactive to do with my husband. I give it two stars because it is something to get you talking and discussing feelings and opinions even if you disagree with the book. That beats just sitting on the couch watching tv. Otherwise though we both felt this book wasn't very revealing and often missed the mark for us entirely. For example, in one question it asks you to describe how you would feel standing in the open door of a flying airplane getting ready to parachute for the first time. In the answer section it says your response indicates how you feel when you are about to have sex with someone for the first time. Okay, how many people wouldn't answer that question with words like nervous anticipation or exhilaration? Both of us did at any rate. Not very revealing. My friend said terrified because she is afraid of heights but she completely rejected the idea that she experiences terror at the prospect of sex. I would imagine alot of people might describe themselves as being fearful of parchuting out of an airplane but not necessarily be quaking with fear in bed. There were also a lot of questions that seemed to be geared to tapping into your subconcious feelings but for us concrete life experience seemed to skew the results. For instance, in one scenerio you are suppose to be searching for gems and it asks you to describe the size and type of gem you searched for. The answer key says the gem you described is a symbol of your sense of self worth. My husband had described a small not very valuable type of mineral but only because the question brought back happy memories of looking for this on hikes with his father as a child. We both felt that this sort of thing came up rather often for us.

Kooky!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Kokology : The Game of Self-Discovery (Paperback)
Well.... this book is quite interesting.... there is the good and the bad. First, the good: the scenarios they set up are quite interesting and imaginative. Such as the one about what you would say to a camel that has carried you through an expansive desert or the one about a dark, long stairway leading into a basement where a stranger awaits you. So that's the cool part. Reading the scenarios and deciding what you would do... But, turn the page.. and here's the bad part. The explanations they give for your decisions are let's face it.. ...! You said you thought the long stairway leading into the basement was 20 steps (to make it seem spooky) vs. 5. So the book tells you that that means you've had 20 emotionally scarring problems in your life. That is so not true! I am a very happy person!! I DID NOT have 20 emotional problems in my past. The book goes along like this the whole time. The reasons/explanations they give are ... in my opinion.. But oh well, the scenarios are cool and provide some entertainment.

Kokology: the game for the 21st century.,
By Maria Maisetzis (New York, New York) - See all my reviews

Did you ever wonder who are you and why you do the things you do? Well, this book is the microscope into your soul you've been looking for. Although this book is supposed to be a game, there is a serious element to it that cannot be ignored. This is a portible version of a psychologists, psychoanalyist, and counselor all in one. The only difference is that you would not need repeated costly visits that will leave you hating yourself or your parents. The advice given at the end of each game is gentle and suggestive that would not leave anyone feeling inferior or uncomfortable. I even recommend young adults reading this book to discover themselves without the pain of playing with drugs or other avenues of experimentation. After having read and done the self-discovering excerises, one could put down the book and re-read it after a season to note the changes in lifestyle made. It is alot of fun to use at a party but also by yourself. I hope a second book is in the works, I am one of many Kokology addicts and fans. GET THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

An interesting book for overnite hikes, coffeebreaks and basically any other time you want to get to know someone without having them bust out their life story. Got some provocative responses from folks at my work.

Kokology: Mind, Spirit, Feelings,
By Kelly Budd (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kokology : The Game of Self-Discovery (Paperback)
Kokology is as the book describes, a game of self-discovery. Through a series games and questions you will gain valuable insight into yourself and others. Play the game and answer the questions, turn the page and reveal what your answers say about you. Kokology is a valuable tool on your own or with a group. It can be played for fun or use it to test it's accuracy on your personality. Beware, Kokology may offer insights that you never knew existed! The senarios are fun and interesting as you contemplate your answers and what you would do. Need an ice breaker or tension lifter, try one these senarios. In work and personal situations, I have used many of these scenarios with success and subsequently great conversation! The spirit that this book was written was for fun and enlightment. Whether you regard the book as serious and accurate or mere entertainment...you will not be disappointed. If Kokology has you hooked, I would suggest also exploring 'The Cube' by Annie Gottlieb and Slobodan Pesic.

There was more sexual content than I expected in this book. I enjoyed the tests, and some were very insightful. My main complaint is that the book was finished far too soon!

Fun with the family or close friends,

This review is from: Kokology : The Game of Self-Discovery (Paperback)
We pulled out Kokology after Thanksgiving dinner and had a great time answering the questions as a family. Some of the subject matter is a little intimate, so be prepared for some interesting tidbits to come out! My sister was very uncomfortable with a lot of the subject matter and said she preferred to keep her deep feelings to herself -- so not eveyone may find this game fun. While I don't think you'll really find out too much you don't already know about yourself, you may find out some things about your friends/family that you didn't know. Some of the exercises are repetitive, but most are pretty fun.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Kokology : The Game of Self-Discovery (Paperback)
The book has several sets of questions which supposedly elicit your deep thoughts and attitudes, but the sets are all very similar, just different in details. So, after playing three or four sets, it gets repetitive and boring. You learn nothing more new about yourself. If you already have experienced such question games at parties etc, you might find you already know everything you hoped to learn by doing this book's exercises. For a first-timer, the book will hold some attraction for a few pages, but the excitement wears off QUICKLY.

Too simplistic (2 stars for people under 15... 1 star for adults),
By LIZ (NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kokology : The Game of Self-Discovery (Paperback)
I ordered this book for something fun to do with friends. When I received it I previewed a few of the tests, and was disappointed. The "results" of the tests are simplistic, inaccurate, and seem geared toward the mentality and humour of a junior high or maybe high school student. I continued to read the entire book for any tests that my adult friends might have fun with, and found 95% of them to be ridiculous. It is not the themes or questions asked, but the conclusions drawn that are lacking. I won't give any away here, but the test results bring the same reaction(wince and groan)as a bland, corny joke - when the punch line is coming and is so obvious, but you hope to be surprised with something original...and it does not happen.
This is one of the rare books that I have thrown in the garbage rather than keep or pass on. If you are looking for a similar book for group fun or personal enjoyment there are so many others that would be more enjoyable. A few I could recommend are "Who Are You?: 101 Ways of Seeing Yourself" and "The Cube."

Really, I wear a lemon yellow coat, carry a clear quartz crystal, and it's the mechanics fault!,
By Jill Zimmer "Bean" (Columbus, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kokology: The Game of Self Discovery (Hardcover)
Kokology provides short, imaginary and some amusing scenerios and then asks you questions about the situation. How you describe yourself and/or parts of the scenerio provides insight into who you are and how you view life and those in it. Interesting. . . some of "games" are fun. This book would be fun relaxing with a group of close friends - especially, after imbibing a few drinks. I don't think I would "play" this with a large group, and certainly not with people I didn't know well. Some answers can get pretty "personal". I don't agree with all of the interpretations. I don't talk to camels because I'm losing out on love, but I do talk to my dog as a companion. People really do ask me what time it is in museums and art galleries, so my answer has no psychological tag as far as I am concerned. I have a physical problem with my ear that keeps me from enjoying rides, but- I have three kids. Right, and maybe not. The point is, the book is fun, but you can't take it too seriously, otherwise I'm losing my job today. The Cube, while limited more in scope than Kokology, is short, sweet, thoroughly enjoyable and funnier. I am not sure this is worth buying, but certainly enjoyable to read as long as you don't take yourself, or the answers too seriously.
