5.0 out of 5 stars Music Holds Deep Polish Roots October 15, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If you are looking for a traditional Polish Carols Christmas CD, this is the one for you. Sung in Polish by the Polish Song and Dance Ensemble, the music of this CD offers its listener the beauty and the ambience of the season in a choir setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! January 22, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The production was well done and the songs were nostalgic for me. It's unfortunate that they are not translated into English for Americans to enjoy even though I do catch snippets of tune parts in other music such as in one of Manheim Steamrollers'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Polish Christmas CD ever !! November 23, 2010
Format:Audio CD
For as long as I can remember, this CD has been considered the # 1 Polish Christmas CD, and it still is.

The two most popular Polish folk singing groups, Mazowsze and Slask, lend their voices to traditional Polish Koledy (Carols), with beautiful orchestration, echoing the rhythms of the Polonaise, Mazur, Kujawiak, and Krakowiak, Poland's national dances.

Of course, both Mazowsze and Slask have since released other Christmas albums, including Mazowsze's new "Koledy Polskie" (a re-issue of their rare Koledy i Pastoralki CD), which is a bit more folksy than the orchestral CD listed here, but if you are experiencing Polish Carols for the first time, this is the CD to go with.

Polish Koledy first appeared in the 15th century. A large number of them were written during the Baroque period, and by the 17th century, the number of Polish Carols was immense, with a greater variety than any other country.
Polish composers and folk writers were not concerned that Bethlehem was nothing like the snowy mountain region of Zakopane, or that the shepherds did not have Polish names, but those are the images that these songs evoke. Koledy (carols) are an integral part of Polish heritage.

On this CD:
1. The Lord is Born (Bog Sie Rodzi): 18th century, derived from a coronation polonaise of Polish Kings going back to the 16th century.
2. In the Stillness of the Night (Wsrod Nocnej Ciszy): 18th century Baroque.
3. They Hastened to Bethlehem (Przybiezeli do Betlejem): One of the oldest carols, from the 16th century, with the joyful mood of Baroque period.
4. Baby Jesus (Jezus Malusienki): there are several versions of this carol, with its folk lyrics and Kujawiak melody.
