5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and well-written

3.0 out of 5 stars Kombucha review: Old book but good information
This Kombucha book is very thorough and straightforward. I found it to be great for a first time kombucha brewer. However it was written in 1991 so some of the stuff I am sure is outdated. Overall it was full of good information but for such an old book and being used the price was too high. Most of this info can be found online for free if you know what to look for.

Since I started drinking kombucha tea a few months ago, I've read several books on the subject. Now that I have read Gunther W. Frank's book, I don't feel the need to read any of the remaining others. He gives complete information about what's known about the culture, different ways to brew the tea, how to store the culture, what to do when problems arise, the effects of drinking the tea, etc. What I particularly like is that he provides all information he has come across, even when he disagrees with it. Unlike some other authors, he's not condescending or proprietary about kombucha.

He seems like a wise person. The final chapter, which is entitled something along the lines of: 'Is Health Really the Most Important Thing?' is worth reading in its own right.

If you are interested in learning about kombucha tea, I'd definitely recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best book on Kombucha, August 9, 2009

This review is from: Kombucha: Healthy Beverage and Natural Remedy from the Far East, Its Correct Preparation and Use (Paperback)
In a sea of books focusing on the seemingly miraculous possibilities of Kombucha, this book is a down-to-earth refreshment. Gunther Frank focuses on the facts.

Unfortunately, it was originally written in German and translated into English, and it shows a bit. Some of the phrasing is a bit peculiar.

All in all, if you are interested in making your own Kombucha, this is definitely the book to get.

Including some interesting facts! I got a culture and the instructions were good, but this book told me so much more information! I never even thought about if you can eat the culture itself. A great book to read if you like to have more in depth information about this interesting and healthy beverage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evidence-based, January 14, 2012
This review is from: Kombucha: Healthy Beverage and Natural Remedy from the Far East, Its Correct Preparation and Use (Paperback)
I read two or three books on kombucha when I started making it, and this was the most comprehensive. It not just extolled the benefits, but cited scientific studies. If you read only one book on kombucha, this should be it. Many others (like Kombucha: Miracle Fungus) just preach to the choir with anecdote.

This book is a bit outdated and the author writes in a narrative form that can be labor some at times but this book still is an incredible resource. The author has meticulously researched the topic from brew times to tea type effects on the culture.
