Editorial Reviews

Review

The virtuosic Polish pianist has the training to conjure
melodic themes from classical works with grace and
precision. He also has an adventurous spirit, instantly
deconstructing and reworking such themes into something
entirely new. As a solo performer, his game is all about
innovation on the spot. --Charleston City Paper

The Simons Fine Arts Center Recital Hall was sold
out Sunday afternoon for the opening of a series of
performances by Leszek Moz dz er, a highly acclaimed
Polish pianist. It might be a pretty safe bet to say that
Moz dz er is not at the top of the name recognition list of
most Western jazz fans. Nevertheless, Sunday s concert
sold out days ago ... Tall with long, brown hair, Moz dz er
addressed the instrument with grace. That, however,
belies his aggressive, percussive approach to playing. He
got everything the Steinway had to offer Sunday. In fact,
his interpretations were so lush, songs were virtually
unrecognizable. --The Post & Courier

Product Description

A series of small masterpieces for jazz & classical music fans, from one of the
most important discoveries in the Polish jazz scene. A unique, pioneering style that crosses the border
between classical music and jazz.
Pays homage to the second great national hero of
Polish music (next to Chopin): Krzysztof Komeda. The
jazz pianist and film score composer died in 1969 at
age 38, after having written among other things the
soundtracks for almost all of Roman Polanski s films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very captivating mix January 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The piano solo interpretations of Krzysztof Komeda standards (eight of them) on the newest Leszek Mozdzer album "Komeda" are simply fabulous.

The music here is very reflective, a bit melancholic at times, then cheerful, then nostalgic; there is a whole spectrum of different moods but these changes follow certain inner logic that prevents the listener from becoming confused or distracted. I've listened to this album only a few times so far, each time discovering some new details, impressions... each time enjoying the music more, becoming hungrier for still more. The music is simply very rich, multilayered. I'd say what Leszek Mozdzer is doing on this album is to play variations on the themes of Komeda's standards. These variations are perfectly faithful to Komeda, all compositions are instantly recognizable (to those familiar with Komeda's music that is) but at the same time each composition goes through radical transformation. To enrich his interpretation Mozdzer appears to borrow quite extensively from others, composers and pianists alike... I hear notes being played as if it were Szymanowski, Satie, sometimes Chopin, then all of a sudden as if it were Ahmad Jamal hitting the keys, another time Dave Brubeck. This is deliberate, Mozdzer shows how flexible Komeda's music is, how differently it can be molded. The final mix is both very original and consistent in style.

This is officially Jazz. But, as those references to classical composers show, influences of classical music are very strong here, hence, I'd predict it should be enjoyed by jazz fans and classical music fans alike. Highly, very highly, recommended.
