Listening to the extended Capriccio Stravagante that opens this disk reminded me of the recordings made by The King's Noyse of 17th century violin music, except weird stuff began to creep in: Wrong notes, bad entrances. Eventually it all fell apart. That's deliberate, as the album translates to Comedy Music of the Baroque. Also on the album is the amazingly taut Fencing School by Schmelzer, a viola da gamba sonata about abdominal surgery (complete with dramatic narration), a violin sonata by Biber that features a lot of birds, and other creatures, and Vivaldi's concerto op. 10, no. 2, entitled "The Night."

The last piece is supposed to be a flute concerto, but poor Leopold Stastny gets upstaged by the Concentus Musicus ensemble and the bassonist, Milan Turkovic, whose playing alters between bouncing frog and blithering night spirits. The strings show some of the craziness that would pop up later in the group's recording of Vivaldi's Il Cimento.

It's nice that some of the Das Alte Werk (the Ancient Work) is getting a fresh release. Also nice is that most of the original notes are released along with the CD. All in all, a real find that has held up very well over the years.

Finally, if your French is a bit rusty, I found and tweaked a translation of the dramatic narration that goes along with Marais' "abdominal surgery" sonata.
