Cool look, insufficient light,
By
This review is from: Koncept Z-Bar Mini High Power Adjustable LED Desk Lamp Daylight White Illumination - Silver
I installed this lamp into my office two days ago. I purchased it for two reasons: (1)I wanted to reduce the electric consumption of the previous lamp, and (2)I wanted to reduce the amount of heat being generated by the previous lamp. Prior to this lamp, I had one that contained two clear 40 watt bulbs.
Overall, the look of this LED Lamp is pretty cool, though some will find its overly modern look strange. Though it can be contorted in a variety of ways, it is not infinitely flexible. For example, it is not possible to place the arm with the LEDs parallel to the extension arm, as it will only rotate through 180 degrees against the arm. The LED arm cannot be rotated up and down against the extension arm either. As a result, it can be difficult to get the light where it is truly wanted. Still, I happen to like the look, but its total occupied space seems larger than the previous lamp due to the inability to bend it. I know that it has less "material", but it extends further into my workspace than the previous lamp. The light it produces is very "white" compared to the normal yellow-tinted light of most bulbs. Some will find this "cool white" too stark, but again I like the particular light. What is disappointing, however, is the amount of light it produces. First, the light is very directional -- straight from the bar with not a lot of spread. It is very distracting to catch the LEDs out of the corner of the eye, so the LED arm pretty much needs to be directed so the bulbs are straight down, limiting the ability to cast the light forward. Since there is an equal amount of light spread around the arm, the result is about half of the available light being lost behind the lamp. Second, the bulbs are not as bright as I had imagined. I have an LED flashlight that almost qualifies as a laser pointer with its output. Clearly, it is possible to generate a great deal more lumens than this lamp does. In short, it is a modern looking lamp that does run cooler (and presumably consumes less energy, though I haven't hooked the meter up to it yet), but that fails to produce enough directional light to make it truly worth the purchase.

A perfect workstation lamp,

The little Koncept Z-bar was the perfect choice for a workstation desk lamp. A major problem with finding the perfect lamp is controlling the direction and spread of the light, and its intensity. Glare on the monitor is unacceptable for me, but many lamps project from too high to control it. The Z-bar can be adjusted so that the LED light bar is only a few inches above the desk. And it has three power settings. I usually only use the lowest setting. I also like the fact that it can be adjusted so that the lamp itself is behind the monitor and only the LED arm projects around, but below, the monitor. It is hard to imagine another lamp that would work so well. A bit pricey, but well worth the extra money.

great design but the lumen output limits its use,

I really like the look of this lamp. It is modern but not post-modern and it takes up relatively little desk space. When I opened the box I first thought I had some sort of Ikeaesque project ahead of me, but the lamp went together very quickly and it was obvious which part went where. This is an excellent desk lamp, however, the light output is not good enough to illuminate an entire work space. The LED bulbs are positioned so that you get ample light directly below them and this works great for reading. If you are looking for more than a reading light, however, you might be disappointed with the Koncept Z-bar. I plan to get one for my office too since I hate the overhead florescent tube bulbs installed by my employer. I've invested a lot converting bulbs in my house to LED. This lamp fights in with my plan to have all LED in my house. As far as value goes, this lamp is expensive if all you want is a simple desk lamp for reading. But if you are looking to move toward LED and you like the design, this is actually not a terribly bad value.

Perfect for illuminating a keyboard,

I use this lamp at work to light my keyboard and work area, so I can turn off the bright overhead lights. The base piece pokes through the gap between two monitors and the light bar is parallel to the left monitor, just above the top. Perfect white light and no heat, and very stylish and adjustable.

2 of 4 bulbs are dead,
This review is from: Koncept Z-Bar Mini High Power Adjustable LED Desk Lamp Daylight White Illumination - Silver
This is a very cool adjustable lamp that takes up very little space. However 2 of the 4 bulbs have burned out after the warranty was over. I contacted the manufacturer but all they would do was offer to sell me a whole new arm. It was almost as much as a new lamp. And how was I supposed to attach the new arm to the lamp?? Very disappointing. I have 4 of these Koncept lamps - 2 full-size table lamps, one mini, and one floor lamp. I had problems with the floor lamp's top joint not staying up, too, but they fixed it after I mailed it back to them. But I am leery of buying another one. The manufacturer advertises that the LED bulbs last practically forever but their lamps with 4-6 independent LEDs can be problematic. Two of my full-size Z-Bar table lamps have the multi-LED array and hopefully they really will last.

I use this over my desk. It's a good light source, and the step-adjustable controller makes it suitable for any time of day.
Being a geek, I do admire the looks of something that resembles an appendage on the Space Shuttle! The color is a bit bluish for me, though, but that's the only star-loss I have with it. All in all, a good purchase, that has visitors to my office wondering if I stole it from NASA. (In my circles, that's a GOOD thing. Really.) Of course, there is the usual LED Power-saving benefit to it as well, so I can smugly claim to be saving the planet and all the whales&owls&trees&etc. |
