4.0 out of 5 stars Very cool
I like the looks of this light a lot. I use it in my office over my computer space. It is stylish in a high-tech way so it fits this setting well.

Pros

-It is amazingly skinny so it doesn't clutter the air space around your desk.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another person with a switch failure
I have five of these. I bought one and liked it a lot. Then I bought 4 more for various places in the office and studio. It's bright if you put it close to what you are working. And it puts off less heat than a CF bulb, which is to say that it is really cool.

But, in the first lamp I have had the failure that was described in an earlier review. It began...

I like the looks of this light a lot. I use it in my office over my computer space. It is stylish in a high-tech way so it fits this setting well.

Pros

-It is amazingly skinny so it doesn't clutter the air space around your desk.

-Very little heat is generated which means you don't have to worry about burning your fingers when you adjust the light.

-The total weight of the lamp is minimal (a few pounds at most) so it easily clamps onto the end of my desk. The clamp itself is very tiny. This frees up more desk space.

-The light output is plenty adequate.

Cons

-The major negative is that the on/off buttons are located near the base which means you must reach all the way across your desk to access them especially if you use the clamp. If you have desk stuff in the way which is one of the reasons to use the clamp in the first place, then it is cumbersome. If the on/off switch were located near the LED's, this would make a much more user-friendly design. You do have the option of using the circular desk stand which would bring the on/off switch slightly closer to you but this takes up desk space.

-Price. Not outrageous but it certainly makes you think twice when you can get a perfectly adequate non-LED lamp for $100 less.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. The on/off switch annoyance isn't that big a deal to me because my desk is relatively clean.

But, in the first lamp I have had the failure that was described in an earlier review. It began flickering then shut off. It now will stay lit for about 30 seconds when you first turn it on and then shuts itself off. The high rating on MTBF on the LEDs is meaningless if the switch only lasts six months.

I am going to see what the scoop is on repair. If I can get it repaired, I'll up my rating, because when the light works it is great. If not, I will give it 0 stars and wait for my investment in these lights to be worthless in another x months.

2.0 out of 5 stars already broken, January 27, 2008
After a few months of occasional use, the lamp began to flicker. Now it doesn't work at all. The on/off switch is broken and I can't get it apart to fix it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sleek and stylish, April 7, 2007

Stylish, lightweight, agile, and functional. It takes up very little room on my desk, especially with the clamp, and can be used either as a general purpose desk lamp or as mood lighting (turned upside down to shine at the ceiling). The color of the light is cooler than usual (more bluish), which I like. The lower wattage, instant "ON", less heat and radiation vs fluorescent and incandescent is a great advantage. There is no warm up time to reach full brightness. Setup is so easy you don't need the single page of picture instructions. In case your source only advertises one color (of the arm, not the light), there are several colors to choose from - I got the metallic blue.

On the negative side, it gives off noticeably less light than my previous single 16" long 15 watt fluorescent lamp. You can angle the lamp to give a wider spread, but then the bright LEDs will shine in your eyes. You generally want to angle the lamp so you can't see the LEDs. The top of the lamp opposite the LEDs does get a little warm. There are no replacement LEDs, so this is a one-time throw away lamp.

As previously mentioned, the location of the on/off buttons on the arm near the base is a curious engineering gaffe. It would have been much more ergonomic to locate them on the top near the LEDs. Since this lamp doesn't give off much light unless it is close to you, you can assume the top will always be close to you, but the base may be across the table, especially if you use the clamp. Having the buttons at the base forces me to clamp the lamp to the near side of my desk, meaning it sometimes gets in the way.

Even with all the negatives, I would still recommend this lamp for general use. I would not recommend this lamp for applications where very bright light is needed. As of 2007, LED technology isn't quite "there" yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best desk lamp ever!, March 29, 2007
I've owned a lot of desk lamps over the years but the Koncept Technologies Z-Bar is by far the best yet! Provides an awesome amount of pure white light is easily adjustable and comes with both a weighted (very heavy) base and a clamp-on mount. Highly recommended.

A great desk lamp. It doesn't get hot, produces enough light and best of all, you can adjust it to shine the light where ever you need it! I would definitely recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very modern design, clean white light, July 18, 2007
I got this a week ago directly from smarthome website and I do love it. Have a top notch form factor. I got a little worried after reading the review that light is not as good as expected but I am very satisfied with the soft feeling of LED and didn't find any problem so far. However, you cannot adjust the strength of light and it would be great if added. It took some time for me to find the perfect angle (which is almost perfect z). It is very modern, thus goes realy well with my modern furniture. It is very slender and does not take up much space. The simple straight line gives you a clean-clean look (instead of softer feel that comes from a round design). One problem I found is it does not look perfect from every angle because the angle of viewer is really important to enjoy the beauty of this lamp(This is the only problem so far, but what can be perfect!) (There is a smaller version of this lamp but the height of the lamp for the Z shape would not be enough to do something under the light in my opinion.) It is a bit costly, but cannot think of buying anything else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice design light output weak equivalent to a 40 watt bulb, August 28, 2007
Great design. Works well for computwer work. I do read text books at my desk and this light is a little weak in output for reading.

I will probably get the new 2007 HIGH Power LED Lamp from Koncept Technologies but $169 is pricey for a lamp.

4.0 out of 5 stars almost perfect, December 31, 2007
Perfect for what I needed. I needed a desk light for computer graphics work. Something that would illuminate what I was reading but not interfere with my my monitors. I knew I needed a piano style lamp and this was perfect. If you are looking for a lamp that will also give you ambient lighting for the room this is not the one. The light is very directional. I would estimate the optimal illumination area with the light 2' hight is around 30" with a rapid drop off. But that's exactly what I needed for my tasks. The light is also in the daylight spectrum, which for me being used to incandescent and halogen lamps seemed very blue and cold. It was a little jarring at first to me but I found this spectrum is very easy to read with and to my eye, doesn't affect the colors of my monitors. Emotionally I want the warmer light but intellectually I think this might be better. So I'll just get used to the blueness. The reputed energy efficiency and lamp longevity are gravy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I do like it !, June 1, 2007

What can I say ... Al Gore made me feel guilty so I started looking for some energy saving devices ... After having read some of the reviews here I was a little reluctant to give this lamp a try ... but I am glad I did. It is much bigger than I thought it would be (my fault for not studying the dimesions) but it turns out I really like the extended length it gives you. As for brightness ... although it is not as bright as I would ideally want ... this lamp still throws off enough to be very useful. I wouldn't want to use it as my only source of light for studying by ... but as a general purpose light while online - it is terrific. LEDs are just now getting mature enough to use as a primary light source - we should see some really great lamps in 2008.

For an ambient light source - buy this lamp. It grew on me fast and I think I might get another! (:
