I like the looks of this light a lot. I use it in my office over my computer space. It is stylish in a high-tech way so it fits this setting well.Pros -It is amazingly skinny so it doesn't clutter the air space around your desk. -Very little heat is generated which means you don't have to worry about burning your fingers when you adjust the light. -The total weight of the lamp is minimal (a few pounds at most) so it easily clamps onto the end of my desk. The clamp itself is very tiny. This frees up more desk space. -The light output is plenty adequate. Cons -The major negative is that the on/off buttons are located near the base which means you must reach all the way across your desk to access them especially if you use the clamp. If you have desk stuff in the way which is one of the reasons to use the clamp in the first place, then it is cumbersome. If the on/off switch were located near the LED's, this would make a much more user-friendly design. You do have the option of using the circular desk stand which would bring the on/off switch slightly closer to you but this takes up desk space. -Price. Not outrageous but it certainly makes you think twice when you can get a perfectly adequate non-LED lamp for $100 less. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. The on/off switch annoyance isn't that big a deal to me because my desk is relatively clean.

Another person with a switch failure,
By But, in the first lamp I have had the failure that was described in an earlier review. It began flickering then shut off. It now will stay lit for about 30 seconds when you first turn it on and then shuts itself off. The high rating on MTBF on the LEDs is meaningless if the switch only lasts six months. I am going to see what the scoop is on repair. If I can get it repaired, I'll up my rating, because when the light works it is great. If not, I will give it 0 stars and wait for my investment in these lights to be worthless in another x months.

Sleek and stylish,
By Brian H (Kaneohe, Hawaii) - See all my reviews On the negative side, it gives off noticeably less light than my previous single 16" long 15 watt fluorescent lamp. You can angle the lamp to give a wider spread, but then the bright LEDs will shine in your eyes. You generally want to angle the lamp so you can't see the LEDs. The top of the lamp opposite the LEDs does get a little warm. There are no replacement LEDs, so this is a one-time throw away lamp. As previously mentioned, the location of the on/off buttons on the arm near the base is a curious engineering gaffe. It would have been much more ergonomic to locate them on the top near the LEDs. Since this lamp doesn't give off much light unless it is close to you, you can assume the top will always be close to you, but the base may be across the table, especially if you use the clamp. Having the buttons at the base forces me to clamp the lamp to the near side of my desk, meaning it sometimes gets in the way. Even with all the negatives, I would still recommend this lamp for general use. I would not recommend this lamp for applications where very bright light is needed. As of 2007, LED technology isn't quite "there" yet.

What can I say ... Al Gore made me feel guilty so I started looking for some energy saving devices ... After having read some of the reviews here I was a little reluctant to give this lamp a try ... but I am glad I did. It is much bigger than I thought it would be (my fault for not studying the dimesions) but it turns out I really like the extended length it gives you. As for brightness ... although it is not as bright as I would ideally want ... this lamp still throws off enough to be very useful. I wouldn't want to use it as my only source of light for studying by ... but as a general purpose light while online - it is terrific. LEDs are just now getting mature enough to use as a primary light source - we should see some really great lamps in 2008.For an ambient light source - buy this lamp. It grew on me fast and I think I might get another! (: |
