Editorial Reviews

Kongcrete is the eponymous debut album by an American alternative rock band Kongcrete, and was released in April 2008. The album's music is one of a kind blend of alternative rock and hip-hop music genres, and it is identified as ghetto rock. Kongcrete breaks the rules with unorthodox sound and powerful, uncensored lyrics. MC's aggressive style demonstrates a vocal range that is not heard in any contemporary hip hop or rock artist. He can growl and scream while maintaining street smart and introspective sensibilities. Punishing low-tuned guitar riffs provide the grit and raw aggression. When combined with rattle-smack funk bass lines and energetic drum rhythms, Kongcrete is a musicians band; yet it provides the underlying rhythmic and melodic hooks that create the cross-over appeal to both hard rock and hip hop listeners. The group's unique sound is a clear reflection of mixed musical backgrounds and ethnic diversity within the band. Kongcrete's present lineup consists of vocalist Taiwo D'Aguilar, guitarist Jack Jankowicz, bassist Jeff To, and drummer Gene D. Williams. Additional credits in the production of the Kongcrete album include mastering by Vlado Meller (Universal Mastering Studios), mixing by Werner F (The Boilerroom Studio), and cover art by Carlos Huante.

This album is for people who are interested in a new awesome experience. To quote my cousin, "A New Dawn is Coming"!! This album by the group Kongcrete mixes hard rock with a street rap savvy hence the name "ghetto-rock". With Ty's hard commentary on any given subject political or physical as in the song "Bittersweet". My favorite song is "RadioActive" because it has everything from tight vocals to the band heavy guitar play to the energetic drum play. For those who like their rock, I highly reccmmend this album!!!

All I can say is wow. These guys deserve a lot more fame than they currently have. But I think it's a matter of time before that all changes. I've never heard anything so primal, from-the-heart, and aggressive in the hip hop genre since Rage Against the Machine, NWA, and Public Enemy. But what sets this band apart is that they are very dark and very authentic. Their drop-down tuning, wall-of-sound grit, machine gun rhymes, and aggressive funk, make them difficult to categorize. Hard rock? Hip hop? Dance? Listen. And decide for yourself.

I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Ever since RATM or Korn debut albums, there haven't been many bands that would come up with a new and interesting sound. I really like this album. I think it's one the best debut albums I've heard this year. I'm looking forward to hear from Kongcrete again.
