3.0 out of 5 stars Nanakuli Should Be Proud, June 15, 2004
This review is from: Konishiki Kms (Audio CD)
For those of us who fondly remember Salevaa Atisanoe waddling across the clay to face prejudiced rivals in a xenophobic land, for those of us still outraged that the xenophobes denied promotion to yokozuna, this album is for you. While it isn't actually very pleasant to listen to, forking over the money will make you feel better for assisting someone who put up with so much from the bad vibe merchants of Japan. Jesse Kuhaulua never put out a rap album, neither did Chad Rowen... makes you wonder what those guys are up to these days.

Though he claimed to be hell bent on dropping the weight after he retired from Sumo, Konishiki still packs on multiple layers of insulating marine blubber around the neck... sort of like David Crosby in recent years. This either helps his singing tremendously, or else it really screws it up. It's hard to tell. Either way, he belts out tunes like there is no tomorrow and for a guy forcing his heart to deal with all that excess weight - who knows, there may not be.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Big Man takes a fall. Yori-kiri!, August 16, 2000

Fans of Konishiki will probably like this CD, but most will eagerly await his early retirement from the music industry. Looks like the Big Man got caught with his mawashi down. Better luck next time, Konishiki!

3.0 out of 5 stars The big man takes a hard fall. Oshi-dashi!, August 16, 2000

Konishiki fans will probably like this CD, but anyone not intimate with the world of sumo will probably look forward to Konishiki's early retirement from the music world. Personally, I like it. But then again, I'm a fan of the Big Man. Konishiki ga kita! Nigero!

3.0 out of 5 stars Heavy-duty?, June 15, 2001

If you are looking for hard-core gangster rap, you'll be disappointed. But if you know anything about Konishiki, and his self-effacing personal style, you'll admire this effort. It doesn't break any new musical ground, but all tracks are well produced, and Konishiki does a pretty fair job with the vocals. Most of the tunes are light and catchy, Hawaiian-islands meets reggae, with 100% clean lyrics. And "Sumo Gansta" will definitely get your groove on - the biggest beats on the strongest track. From Hawaiian-born Sumo star to Japanese TV regular/commercial star to musician, Konishiki never lets his ego get as big as his 600+ pounds. Give him a listen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stick this disk in the microwave and watch what happens., July 24, 2000

Why did someone actually believe that this clown is worthy of a record contract? Just because he is a celebrity DOES NOT qualify him to be a musician. All tracks are a joke- especially his 'fantasy.' He is no hardcore gangsta thug, nor is he a Brian McKnight/Joe - type singer. If you purchase this CD, you can watch your hard-earned money get direct-deposited straight into his refrigerator. To sumarize all of this, please save your cash. There are many other talented musicians out there in the sea of hip-hop.
