4.0 out of 5 stars minimal art... is it less or more?, February 22, 2005

This review is from: Konstruktive Vergangenheitsbewaltigung (Audio CD)
I don't know quite what to say about this CD but it really needs a description here. It's well done, and while it's not breaking any new ground it's not exactly treading on common ground, which is why I really want to give it about 3 and a half stars. But who cares? You want to know about the music.

It's mostly electronic and samples with a bit of vocals. It's very rythmic, but in a very light and calm funky sort of way--meaning that you'll listen to it and think it's got a bit of groove but you won't likely want to dance to it. It's like a more structured Autechre without the boombastic bass beats, and it's like Haujobb's "ninetynine" album without being quite as organic feeling (in fact it borrows some Haujobb samples), which I guess combines to make it an "intelligent" listening and/or background CD with the easy potential for the band to turn it into an electronica dance extravaganza should they ever tour.

But really it's more of a background CD for me. Only the remixes (along with the original version of "day on my own") really etch into my memory--the rest seems to me more like sonic art than song. If you adore the more clickety-click moments of Autechre and don't need the heavy bass moments, and you enjoy sparce melodies, then this could be your cup of tea. If Autechre (and Haujobb's "ninetynine") only kind of grabs you, then this is a risky purchase without hearing it first.
