5.0 out of 5 stars This Will Be Your Best And Last Spotting Scope, January 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Konus 7122 20x-60x100mm Spotting Scope with Case (Sports)
Go ahead and spend $600 or $800 more on a spotting scope if you have to, but I don't think it will be money well spent. This scope has the clarity, illumination, sharpness, exit pupil and eye relief you are looking - at all powers. There is VERY little loss of illumination at max power; barely noticeable - not like those cheap scopes that make it look like there has been a total eclipse of the sun. Also, at 60x it is not like trying to look through a narrow soda straw - you have almost as full an image as at 20x. And, if you wear eyeglasses as I do, they will not remove your eye so far from the exit pupil that you cannot get a full view.

If I want to be unreasonably picky, there is one small criticism: at 60x there may be a slight rainbow coloration at the edges of some viewed items. That may be due more to light quality, e.g., yellowish late p.m. autumn or winter sunlight, than a fault with the optics. I use this scope for viewing targets, so that is not a consideration for me.

No, the nylon carrying case is not padded. But, it is sufficiently roomy that one could add their own foam cushioning.

Needless to say, I really like this scope and recommend it highly. And the next time I'm in the market for a rifle scope will probably buy a Konus, instead of a Leupold, Nikon, etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars lack of QA is a big issue for Konuspot 20-60/100mm scope, January 10, 2011
This review is from: Konus 7122 20x-60x100mm Spotting Scope with Case (Sports)
I ordered the Konuspot 20-60/100mm scope, camera adaptor and a T-2 ring 1 year ago from [...] for digiscoping purpose. The reviews there were brief (mostly only a line or two--at that time I did not know OpticsPlant actually had a policy allowing them to editing customer reviews which they apparently did since my one-page review submitted to them were reduced to a few phrases) but mostly good so that I had high expectations. The adaptor arrived a week later but scope did not until another week later directly from the manufacturer Konus--and the shipping department forgot to include the T-2 rings (which eventually took another 3 weeks to arrive). The scope was surely bright given the 100mm lens but it could not focus on things far away! It has worse image quality and show less details than my 10x binocular ($26) and two 20x rifle scopes (42mm lens, $279). It was certainly defective so I returned it to OpticsPlanet on my own dime (I did not know at the point in time I actually could request a prepaid mailing label from [...]which is nice). Given the excellent customer reviews on this scope (selected/edited by OpticsPlanet), I asked for an exchange for the same product instead of a refund. Two weeks late I received the replacement scope and this time it certainly worked very well on focusing and image quality. On a clear day without much mirage I could see house, trees, and cars miles away with good image quality (yes, this time it does perform better than rifle scopes when all set at 20x-but not day and night difference). However, I noticed a small line at 1-2 o'clock on some digital pictures I took through the scope -- After a close examination I discovered a 3-4 mm scratch on the interior side of eyepiece lens; and it was close to the edge therefore it shows up on picture at 20-25x but not at higher power/zoom). It was not easy to see the scratch mark when directly looking through the lens with a naked eye due to the brightness but it is clearly visible on digital pictures taken or looking at the spot from a certain angle and 2-4 inches away. I contacted [...] and asked for return & refund.

Throughout the whole process, OpticsPlant customer service is certainly a pleasure to deal with, courteous and helpful. Not mentioning the no-hassle return/exchange/refund and pre-paid shipping label. I would definitely buy from them again (I actually did in November).

I ended up buying a Yukon 21031K (6-100x100mm) from [...]which turned out to be a good decision: lighter, better clarity and with even come with a small tripod (A small twist here is that the first scope they sent me was also defective with a scratch on the interior side of lens but the replacement they sent me was wonderful--it seems that QA issues are quite common across less expensive scopes.) I use it for range shooting and have no problem spotting 308 bullet holes at 300 yards (can probably do even better on ideal weather conditions). Another nuisance is that the power ring becomes hard to turn in cold weather and I wish there were places/holes accessible to put in a drop of lubricate oil. For details please see my review on Yukon 6-100x100mm scope.

With this long review I really hope Konus (and Yukon as well) beef up their QA process.

2.0 out of 5 stars Konus 7122, Good Scope for $200.00, March 30, 2009

This review is from: Konus 7122 20x-60x100mm Spotting Scope with Case (Sports)
Two of these scopes were received. In each instance there was mechanical malfunction or product blemish symptomatic of poor quality control leading to returning each. With the 100mm objective lens, this scope is large and requires a most sturdy mount. Regardless of how this scope might be mounted, it remains "front end heavy". The site picture was brilliant from minimum to maximum focal point, yet each use was on sunny days that would suggest nothing less than brilliance. Albeit heavy, this scope felt more like a product you'd buy at Wal-Mart. For $300.00 plus, expectations might have exceeded the considered excellence of this scope. Were it priced $100.00 less, it would prove a satisfactory and worthwhile value
