I picked this up and read 100 pages before I even realized it. Who knew that surfing was so interesting? There is a lot to know but Borte gently educates you in a very witty fashion. He entertains you with his own mishaps. The 9 stupid questions not to ask a surfer made me laugh out loud, (I've asked them all). I didn't know that 99.7% of the population does not surf. I know so many people with surf apparel and gear. We are all wannabes. He also demystifies shark bites, only one person dies every two years by a shark attack, way more people die by dog or snake bites every year. He offers very helpful information on how to just go out and surf or find a surf school.
A great read. I recommend it.

From the moment I began reading I was hooked. Borte's writing style is brilliant and keeps you wanting to see what he will say next. As someone that has been around surfing for most of my life but never actually tried it myself, I can honestly say that this book is applicable to everyone, whether you are a surfer or not. Although the primary theme is surfing, the ideas and ways of being Borte discusses apply to everyday life. Overall it's a smart, funny, easy to read book that is very enjoyable and I highly recommend it.

The Kook's guide to Surfing is not just a "learn how to surf" book. I love the approach it took in relation to the bad rep that surfers have historically been given by "kooks" and how to counter that by highlighting a respect for other people, nature, and yourself that every true surfer should have.

The illustrations are comical and the book also offers great insight into the world of surfing that is helpful to riders at every level.

Jason Borte is not only a renowned surfer, but an inspirational writer as well.

A particular group of surfers (among others) should buy this book. I write of those of us who started surfing in the early 1960's, gave it up less than 10 years later (due to grad school, marriage, mortgages, and kids), and now are contemplating getting back on a board - even at our (ahem) mature ages. This book delightfully brings you up to date from the days when every board was a long board (although we didn't call them that - we called them surfboards -lol), and surf-cams, (let alone the internet), were not yet invented. Many of the surfing terms we used then are now out-dated. But have no fear - this book will get you up to speed, and also will remind you of the things you knew back then, may have forgotten, but still are useful. If this review describes you, buy this book. Have fun, . . . Boomer1946
