3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be
This cd is a let down. I have seen Kool and the Gang live and I expected the same show from this cd, but it wasn't there. For one thing, JT isn't there and neither is Skip, so find another live cd to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST CONCERT VIDEO EVER, September 12, 2001

This review is from: Kool & the Gang - Live from House of Blues (DVD)
Kool & the Gang Live From House of Blues is 85 minutes of absolute pleasure. Viewing this DVD on average equipment enables one to appreciate the wonder of DVD. The truth is unleashed here of the talent, intelligence and experience involved in Kool & the Gang's 31 year plus career. They seem effortless in unintentionally proving that they are the best band in the world. Their intricate instrumentation, amazing sense of rhythm, beautiful melodies, impressive choreography, professional showmanship, and vocal perfection shows that they have aged to perfection. Anyone still alive who ever mattered to the band's success and sound was on stage, really making this the K&tG all stars or the "superband." They performed their original songs from all periods, from the 60s, 70s, 80s 90s and this Century, all sounding even better than their million selling records. Each bandmember was featured in rare solo form, blending Jazz, Funk, Rock, Ballads, and tasteful Hip-Hop, lightly seasoning the show with all the original ingredients provided by the most sampled band in history. If a potential purchaser has a chance to aquire one music DVD or even one DVD of any kind., Kool & the Gang Live from House of Blues would surely be viewed more times with everyone you know, than any other choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars front row seat, January 8, 2002

This is the best sound by far on dvd I have heard. This was recorded with the dvd format in mind at The House Of Blues in Chicago. From begining to end you will be there live. The show is high energy starting with Emergency, Hollywood Swinging and Jungle Boogie then goes into some jazz funk with Chocolate Buttermilk, Sea of Tranquility and Let The Music Take Your Mind. Kool and the Gang are joined by some great musicians to make this a full surround sound dvd. So invite some friends over, put the dvd in... and party front row.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Jazz-Funk DVD! The Original Kool & The Gang Music!, November 17, 2004
This review is from: Kool & the Gang - Live from House of Blues (DVD)
Purchased this DVD and it was exactly what I was looking for. I'm a big fan of the early Kool music. Hollywood Swinging and Jungle Boogie were some of the first 45's I purchased as a kid. I'm a huge fan of the instrumentals and loved that Kool & The Gang, Ohio Players, P-Funk and also Earth Wind & Fire had big horn sections. Loved Summer Madness and Sea of Tranquility. I never cared for the JT era except for Ladies Night and Too Hot. They went too Top 40 for my tastes with the addition of JT Taylor. They didn't need a lead singer, the music was funky enough! So if you're looking for the popular hits with JT on the mic, you'll be disappointed.

They could have left off Celebration and thrown in Rhyme Tyme People and Funky Stuff. Plus a little more Jungle Boogie after the rappers were done would have made this the ultimate DVD. I can't complain though, it was pretty much what I wanted. 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS is the DVD to buy, November 16, 2004

Unless you're hung up on the fact that some of the founding members are not on this DVD, don't worry about the criticisms expressed by others here. I'm going to give you a review from an avid DVD buyer and fan of bands such as Earth Wind Fire, Chicago, Tower of Power, and others.

The camera work is fantastic and modern (recorded in 2001). The sound is fantastic, with pumping drums and bass, and warm and jazzy trumpets. EXCELLENT SOUND, and in DTS 5.1 if you want it. That part of the DVD is ALL SET.

The set list is nice and funky, with some welcome intermissions in jazz (they kind of sound like Chicago meets Earth Wind Fire in some of the songs). I had previously only heard their "pop" funk songs, but after listening to this DVD I have a lot of respect for the new musicians of Kool & The Gang. They got the chops.

One thing: three or four members of the original crew are here, the rest of the 7-8 other musicians are new bloods whose energy and talent are great.

I enjoy this DVD greatly and pop it in often. Buy it. THIS is the Kool & The Gang DVD you want.

Not being an absolute fan of Kool & the Gang, but being well into the funk and soul of the 70's I can honestly say this DVD got me movin' & groovin', the sheer power of the performances especially with 2 drummers in perfect sync blew me away, to be honest half the tunes I'd never heard of , but what the heck, a brilliant concert with real guts, good sound and excellent rythym & vocals highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just had to get up and dance, August 8, 2010
This review is from: Kool & the Gang - Live from House of Blues (DVD)
Horns horns horns simply enjoyable. Had forgotten all about katg until I met them at Singapore and Tokyo airports. Bought this dvd went to the san diego concert. The dvd has a mix of jazz, funk, disco, the only thing that is missing is a blu ray version although this dvd is very well produced. However when you are really enjoying something you want it to be the best it can be. My highest recommendation for katg fans and others who enjoy this genre of music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Was ok, could have been better, January 28, 2009
This review is from: Kool & the Gang - Live from House of Blues (DVD)
What's Kool $ the gang in concert without Funky Stuff and Fresh? You could clearly see and hear where Funky Stuff was edited on this DVD. Why chop out one of their best and well known songs? I have no idea. Anway, they did good on the lesser known songs. Let the Music Take your Mind was good. This DVD really showcased the bands talent on instruments, something they are first....musicians. I would have given it more stars if it had those two songs I mentioned.
