Gr 4-6-- Seven Korean holidays plus Christmas are each presented in two-page spreads, the right page containing text, the left the picture. Only Korean New Year gets a fuller treatment (six pages). The text is interesting and informative, although a bit repetitive, presenting basic facts and foods for these celebrations. Some holidays are not universally Korean, as for example the Cherry Blossom Festival, which is confined to the Chinhae area. The only mistake is attributing the honoring of ancestors to Buddhism rather than to Confucianism. There are two well-drafted and lovely illustrations, but the rest run the gamut from merely maladroit to grotesque. Dodson has a particular problem with human faces, many of which give the impression of having been poorly erased and drawn over more than once. One recurrent little girl appears to be suffering from acute achondroplasia. Although this book contains some worthwhile material, there is not enough of it to justify purchase without illustrations of far better quality and consistency. --John Philbrook, San Francisco Pub .
