This review is from: The Koren Jerusalem Bible: Hebrew/English Jewish Scriptures (Hebrew Edition) (Hardcover)
I was looking high and low for a Hebrew/English bible, one that maintained the authenticity of the original Hebrew text and also gave me the best english translation that was closest to the text. After taking an online Hebrew class as part of my study of getting more familiar with the hebrew letters, the Rabbi teaching the class recommended this bible as the best that he had found. He had been using this bible for years and that was good enough for me. I love using the bible and am getting more and more familiar with it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good hebrew/english translation. (Understand that this only represents the tanakh).

For the serious student,

This was the book used by me at Seminary, and when my children went to (private, Jewish day) school, this was my go-to resource for their translation. The text is clear and concise. I have always appreciated the true-transliteration of names (opposed to the Anglo-translation). I have purchased three copies for use with my class(es), and have asked students to find the book it possible to a 'should have' reference.
I have recommended the book to my Christian friends who were serious about studying Torah.

This review is from: The Koren Jerusalem Bible: Hebrew/English Jewish Scriptures (Hebrew Edition) (Hardcover)
I really like that it has the Hebrew names of people and places instead of the Anglicized names. It has the weekly and daily readings in the Torah marked in the Hebrew which is a real good aid when reading the weekly portions. The only thing that I do not like about it is that the English font is so small. Otherwise an excellent version to take with you anywhere and the English translation is very accurate as well.

Great, readable type, translation isn't as good as JPS,
This review is from: The Koren Jerusalem Bible: Hebrew/English Jewish Scriptures (Hebrew Edition) (Hardcover)
This features the excellent typesetting one would come to expect from a Koren book. It is durable, the dust jacket is heavy duty and the pages feel good without being hard to turn. It is very easy to study from and the typeface is very readable, including nikud and cantillation marks. As I love the Koren siddur, I found myself right at home as soon as I started using it.
There is a reason that the JPS translation (the revised edition is better than the 1917 version) is used so extensively in academic scholarship so I'd advise serious students to look at the Etz Hayim-FL: Torah and Commentary if one wants commentary or the The Jewish Bible: Tanakh: The Holy Scriptures -- The New JPS Translation According to the Traditional Hebrew Text: Torah * Nevi'im * Kethuvim if just a translation is desired. There are travel and pocket size versions of each if portability or a lower price is desired. Due to the translation, I can only give this three stars however if you want it mostly for the Hebrew, this product is hard to beat. |
