Embraced by DJs, musicians, and producers alike, the Korg KP3 Kaoss Pad Dynamic Effects Sampler is intuitive, immediate, and just plain fun to use. By simply touching, tapping or sliding your finger over the touchpad, the Korg KP3 allows you to control multiple effects parameters and manipulate samples in real time. On stage or in the studio, these gestures and moves can become truly powerful and expressive performance elements.

More than a processor, the KP3 is a complete instrument allowing you to manage, recall, and play back samples; sample on the fly; and add dynamic processing to any audio signal or to the samples themselves. The KP3 is an effects sampler with 128 effects, ranging from traditional effects such as delays, flangers and reverbs, to exciting new effects, like grain shifter, decimator, analog style filter with a tone-bending drive circuit and EQs controllable directly from the pad.

The KP3 offers a Secure Digital (SD) slot for loading and saving your sample data. And an editor/librarian program is included with the KP3 effects sampler so you can build libraries of samples and edit them using your computer (via USB).

Trip The Light Fantastic

The new pad lighting system of the KP3 DJ effects sampler provides visual cues for the current program, held position, and more--it can even scroll a custom message! This interface offers a whole new level of operator interaction.

Sync'd Up

The KP3 effects sampler's Auto BPM circuit derives tempo information from a turntable or CD player and can sync effects to play in perfect timing, while providing MIDI clock to other devices.

A DJ Effects Sampler Beyond Effects

Instant drum grooves and RADIAS-inspired vocoder and synthesizer sounds can also be played on the X/Y pad, and, they can be synced to tempo just like the effects.

Capture Contraption

Sampling and effects are integrated completely, so you can sample through the effects, and even resample the output to create powerful, multi-element sounds. Plus, you can sample and resample the synths and drums within the unit KAOSSILATOR style, to create musical phrases on the fly.

Korg’s KAOSS technology has been embraced by DJs, musicians and producers alike. No other interface is as intuitive, immediate or just plain fun to use. By simply touching, tapping or sliding your finger over the touchpad, the all-new KP3 allows you to control multiple effects parameters and manipulate samples in real time. On stage or in the studio, these gestures and moves can become powerful and expressive performance elements. More than a processor, the KP3 is a complete instrument allowing you to manage, recall, and play back samples, sample on the fly, and add dynamic processing to any audio signal or to the samples themselves. This latest KAOSS incarnation has been completely overhauled to enhance your creativity, with significant advances in every area. New effects algorithms, synth sounds derived from our RADIAS engine, bigger and better sampling plus computer connectivity all point to the fact that the KP3 is an entirely new KAOSS instrument. A new pad lighting system places 64 individual LEDs in an eight by eight grid under the pad, providing visual cues as to the current program, held position, etc. It can even scroll a custom message across the pad! The KP3 comes equipped with 128 great-sounding effect programs Sure, the traditional essential effects are there– delays, flangers and they sound amazing. But using newly developed algorithms, the KP3 also provides fresh, exciting effects such as a grain shifter, decimator, a vintage analog style filter with a tone-bending drive circuit, and expanded EQs that are controlled directly from the pad. And moving beyond effects, there are also drum grooves and even RADIAS-inspired vocoder and synthesizer sounds that can be played free-form on the X/Y pad.

first thing, i am no where near a pro with effects and recording equipment, that said, i have a long history with korg, and know from exp they make really good effects and at good prices. this machine is addictive. i want to let potential buyers know what you can do with the kaoss right out of the box, with about 20min w the manual. so it is basically an effects processer, instrument(drum machine and synth) and a sampler(w 4 banks a-d) i have a 400 disc player, and ran the rca through the korg line in, and line out into a 8 track digital recorder. and its just fun. i hit random play, and rarely get past the first 30 seconds of a song. the kaoss makes it very easy to sample any line in, and loops them, you can use up to 4 at a time, and you can save your fav samples on sd cards (2gb max, which you can buy on amazon for 7$,i like kingston) thats just the beginning, once you get a sample or samples, you have a hundred dif effects(phaser, grain, delays, re-verb common effects and sounds in the korg library) so you get a sample, you loop it back and you can manipulate it in a infinite number of ways. it also has bpm, a feature that syncs the beats in the machine to music from the line in, so it does the timing for you, and the beats loop in increments(4,8,16} the touch pad(which is huge) act as the knobs on effects and synths. so the clip its playing changes with every move of your finger. , every time you change the effect it opens a new world of the same sample.
now the drum machine and synth, there could have been more banks here and less effects, but some i imagine would say the opposite. i very much like that it loops seamlessly, and you can change the measures, but not as versatile as traditional drum machines.

There is no doubt this is an amazing piece of equipment. No doubt their are rave reviews because it's fun to play with. I wont go into a lengthy discussion of what this offers. There are plenty of other reviews/youtube videos for that.

A couple things to note. It does best with very busy dance songs that have even timing 4/4, 2/4 etc... The effects are not half as impressive on normal music. While still fun to play with, you'll get the best results when pumping dance music through this thing.

2nd things to note, which isn't a huge deal breaker, and I can see why it is, but, the Microphone jack is Mono. So if you are thinking you can just plug your ipod into it and get a left and right channel you will be mistaken. To compensate you'll need an 3.5mm to split RCA cable to plug into the back. About a 3 dollar purchase.

As with most products from Korg I find hours drifting by as I just play and have fun. Makes you feel like a kid again ;)

I use the korg kp3 with my turntables as an effect tool and it work incredibly well. the synth portion is kinda lackin but i guess thats why there is a kaossilator pro. this can be used to do minor phasers and filters and you can also get pretty crazy with it. also very fun to use the vocoders or just put filters on your voice. i have not used the sampling features as much as i thought i would but they seem to work very well and all the effects can be applied to your samples. i just cant get enought of this thing.

The first thing you will notice when you take this out of the box is how substantial it is in weight, and it's dense cold metal upper. All the Kaoss pads that came before this were housed in a cheap plastic upper and that thin noisey sheet of metal on the bottom like Digitech guitar pedals have. This is very different, and as a result it seems to be nearly twice as durable. I would not dare drop it, as that's how I killed my KP1, but I feel confident that as long as it stays on the table, and you don't directly stab the screen with something, then this is as durable as it gets. For all I know it might be able to withstand these other abuses. Also, around the screen there is a raised ridge that you should find helpful as place to set the edge or your hand or a finger for counterbalance. That ridge is not that comfortable, but whatever...

Although this is an effects processor, by it's basic design and the lineage of the series, that seems to be the least of it's abilities. The strength is in the real-time style sampler. This style is totally unlike other samplers because it is not set to trigger samples but more to mute them, so that your loops stay in sync with one another no matter what. It has just enough simple drum loops and wild synth tones to be somewhat self-sufficient, so effects become more of an afterthought. The sample time is also chained to a strict loop length, so that is very different also. These features make it nothing like an Akai MPC/voice-oriented sampler, and nothing like a Boss digital-recorder style sampler. This unit is made to keep several short loops, made spontaneously, in sync without requiring you to stop the beat in order to modify it.

...to be continued

The KP3 is a great effects processor! I use it side by side with a Kaossilator pro and a microKorg. Very fun to play. It is also very durable and the controls are of high quality.
