Product Description

The korg kaossilator pro dynamic phrase synthesizer is the supercharged version of the palm-sized kaossilator. the kaossilator pro was reborn as a powerful track-making tool and loaded with live performance power. it creates spontaneous changes that were difficult to produce in the past. not any longer with the korg kaossilator pro dynamic phrase synthesizer. as a trailblazer among the "instrumental gadgets" that allowed anyone to easily create melodies and phrases, the kaossilator gained a strong and dedicated user base, even among those without any performing experience. today, the kaossilator continues to be enormously popular. retaining these revolutionary features – while adding a wide variety of new ones as well – is the kaossilator pro. with 200 sound programs, a new electribe-inspired gate arpeggiator, and four loop recording banks that can even record external audio sources, the kaossilator pro is packed with features that make it ideal for both live performance and premium productions. in addition, usb connectivity with your computer and sd card memory storage allow the kaossilator pro to be used not just for improvised performances, but also as a superbly intuitive, track-making music production tool. using touchpad is highly intuitive – simply rub, stroke, or tap it to instantly create complex phrases with a single finger. responding instantly to these gestures, the kaossilator pro creates spontaneous changes that were difficult to produce on synthesizers of the past. horizontal motions control the pitch, while the vertical axis can control tone parameters such as cutoff, feedback, or modulation depth. this makes it easy for anyone to create entirely original sounds and musical phrases.

Like another reviewer here at Amazon, I also got the original kaossilator a couple of years ago and started to spend a lot of time with it. I was reading an article named "Make Music Now" on a magazine related to electronic and computer music when I first learned about the kaossilator.

I'm not a musician and, for many reasons, I never allowed myself to learn music. I always had a passion for music, specially with lots of synths like Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, Airsculpture, RedShift, FSOL, Vangelis, Synergy, Passport, Jean-Luc Ponty, etc, etc. I have always been a passive listener, until now.

When the new kaossilator pro came out I went right away to the youtube website to watch all those people showing their experiences and amazing creativity about this new musical instrument from Korg. Few months later I got my kaossilator pro.

Both devices (Kaossilator and Kaossilator Pro) definitely are not toys. They are a very powerful, dynamic and portable musical instruments. As with every musical instrument they have their pros and cons. If you really want to learn more about these two devices go to the net and watch others about what they are doing with them (for all kinds of music). Those people have been like teachers to me.

Making my own music is my new hobby. I have been doing this for a couple of years and my family, relatives, and friends have been pushing me to "release" an album. I have had released only one single with the main purpose to understand the whole production process. It is a very simple and very very inexpensive process to release digital music. I did a promise to myself about learning a little bit of formal music before releasing a complete album.

Please do a search for "echoes from kiwi" here at amazon.com. That music was done using an iphone, the original kaossilaor, and the kaossilator pro. Again, the main purpose of "echoes from kiwi" is to demonstrate how easy is to create music using a very small and relatively inexpensive musical instruments and a computer.

If you, like me, want to start creating your own music and have lots of fun, the kaossilator pro can be your first musical instrument. I bet you will master it in no time.

Thank you for reading my review.

Eduardo Nava.

I will admit, I've never been a big MIDI user; if I have to access sub-menus to change MIDI modes then I loose interest, unplug the MIDI and just experiment raw. I'm addressing a bit of the cons first here. Syncopation issues are the biggest problem with this unit. It works so hard to keep it's sampled pads in synch with each other, that it fails to provide ample tools for syncing this device to nearly any other (including other Korg devices).

For instance, I can sample a drum loop on this unit, then run the audio line to my KP3 and resample the same loop at the same tempo on my KP3. Then turn off the original loop on the Kaossilator pro, and in a matter of seconds when you turn the Kaossilator loop back on it will already be out of sync with the exact same loop sampled at the same tempo in the same brand's similar device. Notice however, that I am NOT taking off a star for this.

I am also NOT removing a star for the ridiculously short loop time. That does not mean that these are not serious issues that deserve to be deal-breakers for a lot of people based on specifc ways they want to use this, but it means that for this price I would expect Korg to cut a lot more corners.

Now for the pros to justify all five stars. This unit is wildly affordable, as I said, as a completely new type of sampler, or as a sound module, much less for both together. What makes the sampling unique could be considered a weakness by people who refuse to try a new process for loop making. This is because the four banks are always looping. The buttons do not cue-up the loop you just made from the beginning, but instead mute and un-mute it from wherever it happens to be.

As a stand-alone unit, or a part of a MIDI chain, these shortcomings are real, but you can make some amazingly quick and unique drum and simple-note basslines to sample into a more traditional sampler, and the sounds used to make these are not the typical generic stuff seen in this price range. The low end will really shake the hell out of your subwoofers, and if you can keep your hyper fingers stable then you can make some sweet synth lines with a unique approach to arpeggio and pre-integrated filters. This is a great unit to build freeform material for a more trigger-based or long-playing sampler.

This is also a great unit to get people's attention on stage. The tones are sharp and rich and often wild and eccentric (especially if you get too giddy with the touch screen). I like to send my audio output through the KP3 to the Roland SP404SX. I build some short beat parts on the Kaossilator Pro, resample them longer with some melodic accents on the KP3, and then complete the composition in a performance-like manner while sampling at full length on the SP404SX. This has provided me endless possibilities, and a piece of gear I hope to have for the rest of my life.

If you want something unique to give you new angles, this is it. You can stack sounds on each button infinitely with no sound loss. Occasionally it will sample a snippet when you didn't ask it to, and really that's a malfunction, but I use all of this units flaws to my advantage as an experimental songwriter who is accustomed to all gear having ticks, glitches, and shortcomings that I always integrate and accept in my process.

This is not like other gear. There is nothing to compare it to even in the Kaoss series, really. Try it.

fun for about 5 minutes until you realize that you can't legitimately repeat a performance on this thing. There is no feedback as to what notes are placed where on the pad, so it's basically guesswork as to what note will be played when you touch it. if they had aligned the notes to the LED grid, it would have been a much smarter move. anyway, i still wanted to like this thing, because of the sampling features, until it completely failed to consistently sync MIDI over USB to ableton live. without a working midi sync, it's pretty much useless when using it with other tempo-synced gear.

a lot of good ideas in this product, but the realization falls short.
