Read the reviews, bought it (Lowe's $10.70), installed it and it works great . Some reviewers have had trouble adjusting the water fill level. Let me share this little trick with you.
The top part raises or lowers to set the water level in the tank. If you hold the bottom and then turn the top about 45 degrees counter-clockwise the two parts unlock and you can raise or lower the top part to set the water level. Turning the top part clockwise about 45 degrees after setting the length will lock the valve and set your water level.

If you follow the instructions and make this adjustment outside the tank things should work out OK.

However, if you think ahead a little you can install the valve in the tank to leave clearance so the top part can be rotated counter-clockwise 45 Degrees to unlock the valve WHILE THE BOTTOM OF THE VALVE IS STILL FASTENED IN THE TANK.

Now you can unlock, set water level and re-lock all while the valve is fastened in the tank - no need to remove the valve to fine tune the water level.

I had two fill valves fail within a week of each other in Toto Ultimate toilets. A quick web search found Korky fill valves, specifically the 528 and 528MP, were very well reviewed. Visually, the 538 looked almost identical to the Hunter that originally came with the toilet, but for a few dollars more, I splurged for the 528MP. I am not sure what makes it a MaxPerformer, other than a different looking housing and small dial to adjust the bowl water level when the tank fills, if that is important to you.

It turns out the Korky valves were so similar to the original Hunter valves that I chose to reuse the water supply nuts and washers, plus I could mimic the tank water level setting instead of eyeballing it, which I consider a slight inconvenience. The water level mechanism is a fixed assembly and the tank water level is adjusted by changing the height of the entire mechanism, which can only be done out of the tank. So if you follow the instructions carefully, the tank water level will be close to what you want, but if you do want to adjust it, you need to drain the tank, remove the valve and start again.

Flushing the toilet with the water supply off will empty most of the tank, but some water will remain. Even though I had room under my water supply shutoff for a shallow bucket, I still found that water spilled onto the floor when I removed the old valve, so I found it best to scoop as much of the remaining tank water out as I could before removing the old valve, plus placed a towel around the drain bucket.

Otherwise, at first use, it was a very easy replacement and the valve is quiet and consistent, as everyone claims. I hope it remains that way.

This item was very easy to install and I am 73 years old. Anyone that can follow simple instructions can install one of these. It took me about an hour but I was very meticulous to follow every instruction exactly. I could install a second one in about 10 minutes. One word of caution: They say "hand tighten'" throughout the instructions, but I learned by experience that this may lead to major flooding problems and leaks. I use pliers to get things just a little bit tighter. Just be careful to NEVER over tighten!

This Korky is far superior to the Fluidmaster 400 model which I replaced. The Fluidmaster was my third and performed poorly from the start. It was loud, could hear it down the hall, and slow. In contrast, the Korky is quicker on the fill and whisper quiet, actually getting quieter with use. I have no complaints except one. Neither the Fluidmaster nor the Korky on max setting, fill my toilet bowl enough to flush my American Standard Cadet III. The first two Fluidmasters did quite well. The Cadet III still flushes very well by adding another quart of water directly into the bowl during flushing via a 4 quart pan. The tank fills to the very top edge of the overflow pipe before the korky shuts off - the way I adjusted it. Leakage from the tank is minimal.

Comments on the Korky: It is made better than the Fluidmaster, sturdier. It is far easier to install, in my opinion too. However, it is more difficult to adjust its height to the top of the overflow valve. This requires removal and adjusting the valve's height outside of the tank, then reinstallation. Height adjustment of the valve itself is a snap. I found the instructions quite good.

If anyone has a solution to the Cadet III, please tell me. All my tank compartment components are in good shape. I've scrubbed the toilet outflow tube in the top of the bowl and keep it clean. The bowl just does not fill up anymore - when new in 2008, the bowl filled to fully half or more - now only about one third. I suspect that the valve manufacturers have reduced the rate of water flow to the bowl to save a bit of water.

In sum, I'm very happy with the Korky 528 MP, and will buy another when needed. I'm finished with Fluidmaster.

Mission accomplished. This fill valve did the trick. I no longer have a loud hiss during the fill cycle and toilet is functioning as it should. The hardest part of installation was loosening the nut on the bottom of the tank to remove the old valve. I finally had to resort to using my super grip wrench/pliers tool to get it off. If it weren't for that along with having to switch to a flexible water supply line connector in order for everything to fit, it would have taken only minutes. Of course, I didn't get the tank nut tight enough on the first attempt. Having a towel handy is advised! It took time and patience but I know I saved probably $150 - $200 on a plumber's bill. Time will tell how well the valve holds up over time. Korky provides an excellent installation video on their website - great for novices like myself. I am physically disabled and 51. If I can do it, anyone can.
