If you have decent welding skills, you might be able to make this trap yourself. However those without welding skills or time would benefit from this trap. This trap, while strong and well-built, is useless for trapping squirrels, as it claims, because the trip mechanism requires too much force to allow the trap to trip. I have not caught one squirrel with it. They are able to remove the bait from the trap tray without tripping the mechanism and getting caught.

Also, it is dangerous to set this trap, and you...

You should be cautious when setting this trap, as the spring should be strong enough to break a finger if you accidentally release it on yourself. Be careful if you have pets or neighbors have pets. Wear gloves as much as possible. I used chopsticks to lay the bait on the trap plate. Make sure you use the attached chain to use a stake (not included) to hold the trap in place. There is also a metal washer attached to the frame that you can use to screw the trap onto to something.

5.0 out of 5 stars serious business with this trap, September 28, 2008

This trap is no comparison to the ordinary wooden or plastic rat traps.
With the latter ones rats escape far too often. This one has a very strong spring.
I have put a little plastic cap, created a cup, from a cosmetics product onto the bait stalk so I can stuff it with cheese. Therefore rat has to put some effort to eat the bait. The trap does require a rat to step on it pretty hard to set it off.
I have caught two rats in a two weeks period of time. I use WD 40 to lubricate it, because it will rust. I use it outside. Also, I put bricks on the three sides of the trap so a rat can only access it from the front.

Ok over two years in use and countless number of killed rats. Yes it is strong and it can be messy and challenging to remove a dead rat from it but the death of a rat is instant and you have to have strong trap in order to kill big and strong rat.

I agree with the only other reviewer, this is a good trap, and as already said, it is very powerful. So just how do you get the thing set without breaking a finger (already said): I put the thing in a vise, made a pull back out of old cloths hanger (what would we do without them) and was able to set the thing without a chance of hurting myself, which is a good thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great trap, March 13, 2011

I have had a squirrel in my attic for the last month or so and have not been able to catch it. I tried the traditional wooden rat traps but those were not strong enough, the squirrel would just get out without any harm to it so I decided to try this trap and it worked great. It took a little bit of experimenting with the trigger to set it light enough to go off as soon as it was touched but once I got it figured out it worked great. The heavy spring makes for a quick and humane kill so you don't have to worry about just injuring the animal and having it crawl out of the trap and die in your house somewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice little trap, January 22, 2012

Received the traps quickly after ordering and was glad to see the quality was good. The instructions clearly described how to set them and it's pretty simple to do.

Yes, it has a strong spring and should kill squirrels easily (which is what I bought them for), but not nearly so dangerous as I've seen written. It's a trap. Keep your fingers out of it... ;)

If it doesn't perform as I expect, I'll update my review.

I have not caught one squirrel with it. They are able to remove the bait from the trap tray without tripping the mechanism and getting caught.

Also, it is dangerous to set this trap, and you must be very careful. If they had simply provided a thumb screw lever on the right-hand side of the trap, one could have very safely been able to set the trap without the risk.

Very disappointing product! If you're trying to catch squirrels, pass on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, September 21, 2010

This trap is is strongly built with a very powerful spring. Setting it can be intimidating because it requires strength and care because one could easily break one's finger or even a wrist. I've tried setting it and found it too difficult. Because of the strong spring, releasing a caught rodent for disposal after being trapped, would be a huge, messy challenge in reverse. However, inertia on my part has prevented me from requesting a refund even though its unlikely that I will put it to use. My rating is not for use of the product, but for safety concerns. I would like to hear from users who have successfully used this trap on a continuing basis: set trap-catch- release and dispose-and reset.
