In our tests, this Koss CD player performed very well. The digital bass boost system (DBBS) does a great job of kicking the bass frequencies up a bit, and it can be switched to remain active at all times. The headphones are satisfactory, though they tend to distort a bit at high volumes.
Koss asserts that its new ASP antiskip protection provides 40 seconds of skip-free music. While the antiskip protection is very good, we found its reliability depends on the amount of disturbance the unit receives. When we ran with the unit in our tests, it occasionally skipped but soon recovered. The button for the antiskip protector is on the top of the unit, along with the other main controls (play, stop, fast-forward, rewind, program, and mode). Unlike the DBBS function, the antiskip function resets when the unit is opened or stopped. We would have preferred if this function remained activated until it was shut off manually, so that we could stop a CD then resume playing with the antiskip still online.
The only other drawback we found with the CDP1740A is the lack of a resume function. That means that if you stop a disc, then hit the play button again, the CD will begin from the first track. That small annoyance aside, this Koss CD player is well made and fun to use. Though it does not have every function we ideally like to see, it does offer good sound quality as well as many features usually found only in more expensive players. --David Lavin
Pros:
Cons:
The CDP1740A has a blue transparent lid with control functions positioned in the center, where they're easily accessible. The player has a 6-digit LCD, which displays track, minutes, and seconds.
The dynamic bass boost system (DBBS) adds punch to lower frequencies, and you can program the CDP1740ACP to play songs in a specific sequence. You can also repeat tracks and play songs in random order.
This unit comes with stereo headphones and an AC/DC adapter.

Great sound and surprisingly sturdy,

This review is from: Koss CDP-1740G Personal CD Player with 40 Seconds of Anti-Skip Protection (Translucent Purple) (Electronics)
Because of the low price, I was worried that this portable CD player would break soon after purchase, or the sound would be terrible, or it would eat batteries ... something had to be wrong with it at that price, I thought. But after using it for a month I can say with confidence that it is a fine CD player -- much better than the Sony I had before, which cost three times as much. The Koss CD player spent an entire day with a six-year-old girl who dropped it repeatedly, and it emerged unscathed. I recently sent it sailing off my kitchen table to crash into my hardwood floor, and again it was completely fine. Great sound, very sturdy and you can't beat the price.

great improvement over earlier designs,
This review is from: Koss CDP-1740A Personal CD Player with 40 Seconds of Anti-Skip Protection (Translucent Blue) (Electronics)
i had the model 1659 (same as the 1689 but with 10 sec of ASP) which lasted about 8 months. it almost turned me off koss until i saw this on sale.a huge improvement over that design- better placement of the controls, a door latch assembly that isn't just waiting to fall off, recessed play/stop buttons that aren't so easily tripped when the player is stuffed into a carrying case. my only mechanical complaint would be the adaptor jack- mercifully placed on the other side of the case, but the plug only goes about halfway into the socket. electrically i'm sure it's fine, just disconcerting to see it like that. the electronics are about the same- some hiss but much less, and it seems more forgiving about slightly scratched CDs. headphones are great, with a cute "bondi blue" touch to them. for the bucks, a good deal.

Good Sound, Good Price, A Bit Flimsy,

This review is from: Koss CDP-1740L Personal CD Player with 40 Seconds of Anti-Skip Protection (Translucent Green) (Electronics)
Ive had this cd player for about a week now, and i really like it. It sounds good and it had a low price tag. The shock protection is excellent (try leaving it on a table while a stuborn little brother does his work)and the 40 seconds are great to have in case your in a car (or bus) thats on a bumpy road. The only drawback is this, it is a little less durable than i'd like it to be. Koss should have hinged the lid instead of using the spring. But I know it wont come off when it is closed thanks to the open switch (it is really nice because it eliminates the chance of it opening in my pocket or book bag) But that makes little difference. The cd player and headphones are attractive and the entire design is well done. I applaud Koss for their work on this cd player.
