3.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound...but heavy
Bought them for the sound quality and lifetime warranty. After only one week of use I am pleased with the sound, but the weight of these is killing my neck. They do create a nice seal around my ears to block out noise, but my ears almost start sweating after and hour or so. Now, not to knock them too hard cause they are nice, but I have too big of a head for these. Fully...

O.K. my dad, who was in broadcasting over 20 years ago owned a pair of these, they broke finally, he called Koss, they said send them in, we have a Lifetime Guarantee on all our headphones. They told him they didn't have the exact model he owned since they were so old, but would send him the updated version.(Pro4AA Titanium) While he was a little skeptical of the quality, (I got the story about how they just don't make things like they used to.) and sad to have to send them in, he acted like a good friend died, we finally boxed them up and sent them off. (Cost us $7.00 at USPS) About a week later these arrived, no charge. He took them out of the box and was complaining about how they just weren't the same, then he put them on, and started listening to music, he has had a smile on his face ear to ear ever since, and told me how much lighter and more comfortable they were, he also mentioned that he hated to admit it but they also sounded beter. Needless to say while there was some sentimental value with the old pair he is very happy with the new pair and the improvements that have been made over the years. I also found out from the Koss web site that they invented headphones over 50 years ago, and it is thanks to them that all of our products today have a headphone jack on them. If you want a Headphone that you can pass along to your great grand kids get a pair of Koss Headphones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound, quality for a fairly reasonable price., March 26, 2004

Myself being new to the world of higher-end headphones (it seems full of crazy lingo and brand loyalty), I searched the net for several days for what were considered the best brands. I chose these Koss because I knew the name (and the lifetime warranty, and stories of no-hassle returns, are far more than Sony, Sennheiser, or the rest can boast in the same price range) and I wanted an isolating set of headphones to use for studying (while my roommate pounds out Jay-Z and OutKast on his stereo). The Sonys seemed a little gimmicky (90 day warranty?) and overpriced. I looked at some Bose phones, but they were far out of my price-range. The Sennheisers, according to some "purists", provide the best overall sound quality (although I couldn't imagine anything surpassing these by much), but they appeared too bland-looking and fragile for my tastes.

When I got these I loved them from the start. I never knew they made headphones that sound better than a quality stereo! The sound detail is excellent with audio CDs and MP3s, and the bass is strong but not overpowering. I haven't yet tried these out on DVDs, but I would imagine they would be awesome. As far as isolating goes, I don't know why you would need any type of noise-cancelling headphones (which sacrifice sound quality for technology), because with these babies on, all you hear is the music. My roommate has to throw something at me to get my attention when I have these on! For the newbies out there: these are not for use with a portable CD player or MP3 player; they fall far short of the amplifying power needed to push these phones. If you want something sensitive enough to use with a portable (look for something with impedence around 32 ohms as compared to 250 ohms for these) buy something from the Sennheiser line, as they are also lightweight. I use these mainly to listen to rock, rap, and R&B, with some classical here and there (when studying). These are ideal for the first three but the quality of the classical is not what I would imagine a "purist" would deem extraordinary.

The look and feel of these phones just exude confidence in the craftsmanship and the quality of parts. Simply put, these are some awesome looking headphones. The pads are comfortable but will stick to you in warmer weather. If you don't think you'll be able to handle two extra pounds on your head for an extended period, don't buy these. I only find slight discomfort in my neck after wearing these (and I wear them for 2-3 hours at a time). The 8-foot cord and 1/4" adapter provide ease of use while wheeling around a stereo or computer.

I would recommend these phones to anyone who wants some high-end headphones (from Koss, the people that basically created the headphone) for isolation or just overall excellent quality of sound, with a guarantee for the life of the product.

Just got these phones last night & I am loving them. I bought them from amazon along with Blink 182's new album on the 18th. I got both items on the 20th! Great service.
Anyway, back to the phones. I pulled them out of the box, adjusted and then put them on. They look great and feel very comfortable. I have a fairly large head, but not the biggest. I dont think these phones would fit anyone much larger than me, I put them out to their largest setting. One reviewer said they were too heavy. They are going to be heavier than normal walking headphones, these are designed for studio and field recording. If you are looking to wear these all day to listen to your walkman, dont bother! While they are very comfortable, after an hour and a half or so of wearing them, your ears will get a bit hot. The cups fit very stug and dont leave much room for your skin to breath.
As for quality, I love these phones. While listening to the new Blink album I could pick up on every little detail, even a few mistakes! They are great for bass as well. The middle of the song 'Obvious' has a great low hit from a bas guitar which sounded great on these phones.
Cant forget to mention that these things are sexy!

Great headphones for short listening periods and excellent sound quality, but just not fitting me right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional quality at an affordable price., October 24, 2005
This review is from: Koss Pro4AAT Titanium Pro Headphones (Electronics)
I was a Club DJ for eight years and I've always used Koss headphones on the job and at home. This is my forth pair of Koss headphones, my first two pair lasted up until a year ago so I replaced them with the Pro4AAT and as a backup I purchased a pair of Koss R/80's. The sound quality of both are nothing less than superb. Koss also stands behind their product
with a lifetime warranty and will repair or replace your headphones for just the cost of shipping. There are plenty of high priced headphones on the market that claim to be for audiophiles and serious listeners, I've listened to a few and none can compare. Koss user for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUT THEY SOUND SOOO GOOD!!!!, August 4, 2005

This review is from: Koss Pro4AAT Titanium Pro Headphones (Electronics)
These headphones sound great. I listen mainly to DVD's and do some online gaming and I have to tell ya, the bass these things can pump out is quite remarkable. The high's are crisp and mid's sound so natural, they truly are amazing. But!! They are tight.. For the first couple of minutes there fine but after a while you start to feel like your head is in a vise! (but they sound sooo good) And did I say ENORMOUS!! These thing are huge!! It's like wearing two VW's on your head (But they sound soooo good) and let's talk about wet ears, that's right wet ears.. After a few minutes my ears get all wet and sweaty (but they sound soooo good). Let's talk about the weight, Lord these things are heavy! and I mean heavy!!! Like I said" two VW's on your head" (but they sound sooo good). These are definitely NOT headphones for sissy's! You have to be a REAL MAN to wear these things! So if your a REAL MAN looking for some headphones that SOUND GREAT!!! are ENORMOUS!!, WEIGH A TON!!, CRUSH YOUR HEAD!! and make your ears sweat THEN BUY UM!!!!! You will not regret it. And if after a while of wearing them if your head feels like it's gonna explode!! SUCK IT UP!!! ADAPT AND OVERCOME!! cause your a REAL MAN!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Isolation; Above Average (But Not Great) Sound, March 19, 2004
By
Headphone Nut (Dallas, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Koss Pro4AAT Titanium Pro Headphones (Electronics)
Out of the box, these headphones are heavy and hot, yet comfortable enough for an entire CD. Forget the unusually strong bass response (which can be corrected by reducing your receiver's/player's bass output) these heaphones should actually be considered for their superb isolation properties. Casual use suggests that these headphones isolate external sounds and noise almost as well as popular "in-the-ear" plug-type products.

Sound-wise, the bass response is excessive and muddies midrange vocals, while extreme highs are somewhat recessed. For a more balanced sound, consider cranking back your bass and advancing your treble. Detail, spatial presentation and soundstaging are simply average.

The bottom line: don't buy these headphones if you seek the "best sound". Look at competitive offerings from Senneheiser for that. These cans are most useful for situations where you want the utmost privacy and are willing to sacrifice long-term listening comfort for that privacy.

Recommended for airplanes, TV-oriented living rooms and when your in-laws are visiting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fell off a table and broke - heavy and fragile don't mix!, January 27, 2007
This review is from: Koss Pro4AAT Titanium Pro Headphones (Electronics)
I have a 20-year-old pair of Koss Pro 4AA headphones that are unkillable. Love 'em, but they've seen a lot of use and don't sound so amazing anymore. So I thought it would be smart to get the new 4AAT because I would be getting brand new phones with new technology along with the quality and reliability I had come to expect from Koss.

I had the new PRO4AAT's for a few months and thought they sounded great. They have excellent room isolation and a solid, heavy feel. Then the headphones fell off a table (onto a rug) and the little hinge on one earphone broke right in half! It's made completely out of plastic and to me it's ridiculous that a supposedly "Professional" level headphone should be so brittle at such a crucial location. Especially given how heavy these phones are. I mean, it's only like 1/8" inch of plastic with a tiny metal pin through it. I wouldn't be surprised if this originally WAS designed in metal, then got changed to plastic to cut costs. Then they put a silvery finish on the plastic to make it look like a metal piece in the ads - which it should be!

It would be one thing if they intended them to just break here, if this part was easily replacable, if the phones could be easily disassembled and repaired. But everything is extruded plastic and I couldn't see any way to get these apart without breaking off some little plastic tab.

My old 4AA's have a much simpler design. The phones are mounted in a curved-metal spring clip that fits into holes on the earphone cup and can easily be removed and replaced. They can fall 10 feet, bounce, come apart, whatever - you just re-assemble them and off you go. Seems like a tried-and-true, infinitely better design than the current newfangled and fragile one.

I'm very dissapointed with this purchase and feel that I was misled by all the rave reviews here, none of which mentions this important vulnerability. I think it's reasonable to expect a piece of "Pro" gear to survive more than one short fall to the carpet. Headphones in a recording environment fall all the time - why doesn't Koss build 'em to take it?

Do the research and buy something else - don't be fooled by the sleek looks and solid weight in your hand - or the word "Pro." These headphones broke so easily it boggles my mind. They certainly are cool-looking, and I guess at the new lower price they might be worth the risk - but don't ever drop them or you're out 80 bucks.

I sure am glad I had my 20-year-old pair as backup. Maybe I can take the new speakers out and retrofit them to the old pair...

2.0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings about them, November 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Koss Pro4AAT Titanium Pro Headphones (Electronics)
It is strange that some people like them very much, while the others hate them with the same devotion.
I am neither as I like them with some music and hate with some other. They are clearly not for rock/fusion/acid etc. Better for Jazz and Classic. They are 250 Ohms so do require some voltage not found usually in portable players. But even if put into decent stereo amplifier there is something weird about them.
I think I know the secret that explains. If you open them (and perhaps void your lifetime whatever) You will see a big plastic screw on the driver that squeezes some foam material. The foam (I call it a damper) covers 4 holes in the driver. This is what makes the cans closed and this is the secret. Unscrew the damper - and the sound would be hollow with more bass. Screw damper tight - and there would be no bass whatsoever while the high and he middle will protrude. I've ended with removing the damper completely and putting inside the cans some silicone wadding (have more in my new pillows). Now they sound much better. Isolation is still as high. But there is more bass and the sound is not as hollow as before.
Yes I am an engineer and I've assembled quite some amplifiers, speakers and headphones for myself - So I sure know how to do it. If you are not the best friend of a screw driver and a soldering iron as I am, you may not like the experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Plastic fantastic, December 16, 2008
This review is from: Koss Pro4AAT Titanium Pro Headphones (Electronics)
The sound is good, but the plastic construction is not very solid. One side has already broken, and the other one is about to break as well. After one side breaks they are trash. They have been in use for 24 months in an office setting.
