4.0 out of 5 stars good depending on your needs
Things I liked about these earplugs: (1) They look cheap. And I don't want to be mugged. (2) Contrary to what other people stated in their reviews, I found the noise cancellation pretty good. I was traveling right beside the plane jets and when I turned the noise cancellation on (without even turning on my ipod), the hiss of the jets would nearly die out. (3) The passive...

I purchased these earbuds to use when traveling. They are awkward to use, the sound is tinny with no bass whatsoever, and the noise cancellation is nonexistent. When you turn on the noise cancellation it ups the volume a bit and adds a quiet hiss, you can still hear everything going on around you. I am actually astonished at how awful these earbuds are. (3) The passive noise reduction is pretty good too. I forgot to buy batteries and was using it without the noise cancellation in the subways and I say it was worth it. (4) the sound quality is decent. But don't expect that any amount of money you expend on earplugs is going to buy you bose-like bass.

Bad things: (1) They go deep into the ear canal. I can't wear them for too long. In the beginning it is not uncomfortable. The rubber in the earplugs is soft enough. But after like three hours I want to take them off.

All in all, I think this is a good option for noise-cancelling earplugs, even without taking price into consideration. But don't expect any earplugs to compare to $500 bose earphones.

The noise reduction is good, though the sound quality was just okay and I have had to change the battery with only a month use.

When you turn on the noise cancellation it ups the volume a bit and adds a quiet hiss, you can still hear everything going on around you. I am actually astonished at how awful these earbuds are. I was hoping for a 50% reduction in background noise, instead I have a product that is useless in any situation. Traditional earbuds are far superior. I passed the Koss earbuds on to two other people to try with the exact same results, no one wants them even for free.
Bad product, bad design, waste of money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Active noise cancellation non-existent, October 1, 2009

I have had a few active noise cancellation headphones in the past, all over-the-ear type. They were satisfactory, providing a considerable reduction in machinery noise.
I also owned a few ear-buds with passive noise-reduction, and those work great (including Koss "spark-plug" in-ear phones). I was looking for the ones that would combine both methods, as I think that has the potential to produce a very good overall noise-blocking result, so I had big expectations of these. What I got is a classic case of "you get what you pay for". To be fair: sound quality is very good for the price (far exceeds anything you get from a stock earbuds). Comfort is mediocre. Passive noise reduction was OK, but not great. Active noise cancellation simply doesn't exist in this model. At all! This is not a total loss though: the active noise cancellation unit doubles as an amplifier/volume controller, and given a fair performance in passive noise reduction, they can still be used (given the low price, of course).
Overall I have to recommend against buyng this model.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, with a few quirks., November 22, 2011
This review is from: Koss QZ-77 Active Noise Reduction Ear Plug System (Electronics)
I picked a pair of these up during a clearance sale at a local store, and initially didn't have very high expectations. They look and feel cheap, but they were fairly inexpensive, so I figured I'd give them a shot. After listening to them, though, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The sound quality is good, with nice clear highs and reasonably solid bass, limited mostly by the fit of the Koss "Spark Plugs".

Unlike most in-ear headphones, these only come with one size tip (although they do include an extra pair). In my case, these were a little on the small side, and didn't seal very well. I ended up ordering an assortment of tips directly from Koss, and had better results using a three-level silicone version. While the included foam tips are very soft and comfortable, they're nowhere near as well-made as the Comply tips used by most other brands. On several occasions I've had them fall off the drivers, and the fairly rigid plastic tube through the center has a tendency not to stay attached to the foam.

The noise cancelling works reasonably well, although I did find the hiss from the ANC to be slightly louder and more annoying than most of the other models I've tried. Overall, these are a decent value, but they have enough quirks that you might be better off spending a little more on something like the Audio-Technica ATH ANC23 QuietPoint - Headphones ( in-ear ear-bud ) - active noise canceling which offer a better assortment of tips and marginally improved noise cancelling. I also own a pair of the Audio-Technicas, and have found that they feel better constructed and don't look nearly as silly as these when sticking out of your ears.

I really like this product - it is very small, works well on the airplane, and does a decent job at active noise reduction while listening to the in-flight entertainment. I much prefer having these in my ears instead of the headphones that go over the ears and become painful after several hours.

The only complaint I have is that I can't hear anything now - after two years of use, I would have hoped it would have lasted longer; however, since I do like the product, I'm buying a 2nd one.Koss QZ-77 Active Noise Reduction Ear Plug System

Wow...so many problems, where to start? First, the item is bulky and the cord is too short for the huge unit to fit in a side pants pocket. Second, the "active noise reduction" actually just increases the volume a tiny bit; it does not reduce outside noise AT ALL. The cheap rubber fittings are difficult to insert in your ear, and don't seal very well which greatly reduces the passive noise reduction. Also, the sound quality is on par with $3 disposable headphones. It is muffled and just BAD. My advice: pay a little bit more for good-sounding earbuds, and definitely don't opt for the "active noise reduction" when buying earbuds, as it is worthless, requires batteries, and is very bulky.

I returned this to Amazon, exchanging it for another set of earphones. I had not realized that it is designed as it is, with that little box attached. What does one do with the little box? This is a bad design.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING SOUND QUALITY, January 19, 2007
This review is from: Koss QZ-77 Active Noise Reduction Ear Plug System (Electronics)
I use these on my drum set and the noise cancellation is so outstanding that I can't even hear my drums.....at all. The sound quality is superb and the bass is so low I believe it sounds as good or better than my bose tri-port headphones. Great Price and the #1 best place to buy is here on Amazon. You won't find a better price anywhere else for a brand new pair.
