Although Koss is known for making excellent headphones I was hesitant to buy these ones because the price was so low. These headphones definitely defy the "You get what you pay for law". 2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed
I'm a long time Koss fan, and I'm afraid I have to say I'm very disappointed with those phones for portable devices listening. Currently I have a mach7 (from 1989) and a R90 (from 1999) in this price range. I purchased this one after looking at the tech spec. Everything seamed to be right on. But the actual sound quality is not good, compared to the previous models. This...

Although Koss is known for making excellent headphones I was hesitant to buy these ones because the price was so low. These headphones definitely defy the "You get what you pay for law". They are comfortable and they sound great! I have very high standards when it comes to things... especially the way my music sounds and I am very satisfied with these headphones. I can listen to my music or watch movies for about six hours, but after that amount of time they become just slightly uncomfortable. I listen to all kinds of music and watch all kinds of movies too and these headphones can handle all of it very well. When you play extremely deep bass it sounds just a little bit distorted though (which is really the only bad thing I noticed about them), but come on... even those these headphones are a great deal you're not going to get the same kind of bass you would get from a high quality 1000 Watt Sub. Of course sound output quality depends on the format (and the quality of the format) you are listening to and the quality of your sound card (if you are using a computer) or whatever audio hardware you are plugging these into, so keep that in mind too. Don't let the price of these headphones discourage you from buying because this is a hell of a deal... almost seems too good to be true.

This one is dull and lack detail. What you should be looking on headphones is the stereo image that you get mostly with the high end of the spectrum. Portable players today don't have tone control. They only give you a bass boost (if that much). The UR29 does not have clear highs at average volume. You have to crank this thing up to listen to highs, if you don't have a tone control. So the first impression you get when you try those on is that they are "dull". You might get used to it after a while, and they deliver quality for the buck. But compared to the R90 (in the same price range) the R90 is superior in sound and comfort. Even the cheap mach7 sounds better. Looks? Ok, this one wins, but unfortunately my ears don't see...

For this price range, the UR29 may be agood choice. Still, I'm giving a bad review because Koss did make way better products in this price range in the past, and I'm disappointed they have slipped the high grade quality for this one.

If I've tried those on a store, I would not have purchased them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the money, December 18, 2005

I've had mine for over a year, and they still work and sound great. I guess if you throw them around they might develop problems, but mine have been used for home stereo, and guitar practice (using a ampworks guitarworks interface). Truth is they sound great on the stereo, or with the guitar and are able to cover all the options when playing my guitar through them. They reproduce everything from very clean Jazz and blues to heavy metal crunch, and even when I'm jamming loud they hold together well and cover the spectrum clearly without distortion.

They're more comfortable than my Sennheiser 280 pro headset that I use for recording, and the sound reproduction is pretty good when comparing the two considering the difference in cost.

Simply put you would be hard pressed to find a better headset for the money

4.0 out of 5 stars Koss ur-29 Quality to Price ratio., July 9, 2003

For the price Its an amazing set of headphones. When you read a review you have to know what type of person the reviewer is in relation to what type of person you are. Im a gamer, so I need to hear every little detail to know where the enemy is at or what he is doing. Most gamers go with the DSP 500's. In my opinion these are better than the 500's. Like the 500's, ur-29 doesnt have EAX sound (meaning you cant hear if their infront or behind you but you can tell the difference between left and right). The quality both treble and bass is amazing i havent heard any distortion so far out of these headsets (ive even tried to get them to distort). Another thing you need to look for in headsets is how hard it pushes against your ears. When you have the speakers close to your ears it does 2 things. 1. you can hear more detailed things plus its louder 2. It blocks out all other outside noises/interferences creating concentration on what your doing. The wire is thick so its harder to break also showing that its a high quality headset. If you notice the expensive headsets have thick wires and the cheap ones dont.

The collapsable feature of this headset is only if you really dont have ANY space at all and if you travel. I personally dont like the collapsable feature because once you collapse it you have a hard time getting it back the way you had it before.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent for price, but not for audiophiles, October 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Koss UR29 Stereo Headphone (Electronics)
These headphones have some good qualities and some bad. They look good, fit over you years (very comfortable), block out outside noise, and keep other people from getting irratated because they are very well insulated. The sound quality is only average. Bass isn't very strong, highs are not sharp, and overall the sound just lacks the crispness of a good sounding pair of headphones. They also are not very loud. I don't know if this is because I (college student) am too poor to shell out 200+ dollars for some headphone amps, or they are just natually not loud.

These headphones also nead some breaking in, which means you need to use them for a number of hours before they start sounding better, probably 5-10 hours.

Overall, they aren't bad for less than 20 dollars. If you aren't obsessed with audiophile sound quality they aren't horrible. However, for 20 more buck you can get some vastly superior seinheisers. But remember, if you do shell out 100+ dollars on some headphones, they will sound horrible without a headphone amp and a high quality recording. Because, they will be underpowered and they will accuratly portray every freaking fraw in the recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Headphones, October 26, 2005
This review is from: Koss UR29 Stereo Headphone (Electronics)
On a whim I purchased these headphones, looking for something cheap to watch movies with on my computer. I was remarkably impressed. The sound is exceptional, and the bass is beautiful. I am in love with the extra long cable, which i have yet to find in any other headphones. Most extraordinary, however, is the durability. I have had these headphones for two years now, using them on average five hours a week, and have yet to have a problem. Last christmas, i wanted a pair to keep in my suitcase, and i bought some other pair and the ear piece coverings fell off within the first week. These headphones are a class act through and through.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice looks, but average sound, May 5, 2005

I have used other Koss headhones (KTX-Pro, KSC-50, TD65) before and they all have that nice, crisp, warm-sounding "Koss"-trademark sound. The UR29, however, although speced better than the TD65, did not have this trademark sound. Even though it has a higher frequency response of up to 20khz, it sounded very muffled: the mids sounded "watery" and the highs were totally lacking. The bass was satisfactory. The isolation of the earcups is quite good, but unfortunately the sound just didn't cut it.

In terms of design, the UR29 is quite nice, but flimsy in build. The folding mechanism is not very intuitive and many users will likely break the linkages after extended use.

Overall, nice looks, but average to sub-average sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stereophones, very comfortable, in-line volume control, July 23, 2003
By
"apollokiev" (Cary,United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Koss UR29 Stereo Headphone (Electronics)
I had originally bought a pair of Sony MDR 150's, but found they were quite uncomfortable. However, these Koss UR29 are VERY comfortable. The earcups are well padded and fit over your whole ear. The headband is also thickly padded. Another advantage is that the cord enters the left earcup only -- the right wire goes through headband. This results is much reduced chance of tangled wires. There is a built-in volume adjuster, which lies about 12'' from the left ear cup. Handy feature if you're on a computer. One thing that I did not see with this headphone was an adapter to fit into the thicker headphone jacks, like those commonly found on receivers.
As for sound, I'm quite pleased. The lows, mids, and highs come out crisp and cleanly, and the bass can be really felt when its demanded.
The only downside in my opinion is its somewhat bulky nature, but I can understand why -- the comfort level is fantastic.

Highly recommended. .... at CircuitCity.

5.0 out of 5 stars KIDS WILL LOVE THIS, August 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Koss UR29 Stereo Headphone (Electronics)
I've purchased several headphones for my kids and none of them fit on their little heads as well as this set does. Snuggly fits on my seven year old who was always holding the previous sets with one hand or pushing them back on his ears. He can bend, jump and run with these on without having them slip off. When I am actually given a chance to listen with them, they have a tremendous audio quality. I am shocked the price is so low for a high quality product, but with our large family I was able to buy two for less than the price of one set of SONY headphones. Thx Amazon.

Awesome pair of headphones! You will not find a better pair even among those in the next "higher" price range! They're that good!
I use them for at home Music and Computer gaming.
I have to say, if anyone out there is looking for a pair of headphones to enhance your computer gaming expeiriance, these are your phones! And my music CD's sound great too!
There is only one thing I would change on these headphones. The tightness of the band. It's flexible and I can wear them for hours. But I would much prefer them to be looser. They fit a bit too snug. But I can put up with it, there just isnt another pair of headphones out there that can match their sound quality for the price.
