I have wanted this bento box for 4 years now, and finally, I recently purchased it directly through Amazon (shipped and sold.)

Always check back on the price of it if it seems too steep. I would say it's definitely worth $20+s&h for the quality and craftsmanship of it. I payed $9 more then the current asking price, but I don't regret it at all. It is incredibly adorable and simple, yet the design is beautiful and intricate, made in Japan and seems to be very sturdy.

A note for perspective buyers: it is SMALL. Understand Japan, and most other countries eat smaller portions then we do in America, but it is hard to tell the size from the image, and I think most would be put off, or at least initially shocked by the size upon its arrival for the price (this is an observation, not a complaint.) Assembled as the full samurai, this bento box is 5 inches tall with a diameter of 3 inches (for those who only read reviews and not the sizing details.)

However, I find it perfect and totally worth the price. The three compartments hold plenty of food for a quick, properly sized, lunch time meal for one person (as is its intended use,) and he looks SUPER cute sitting out on the kitchen counter when he's not being used to hold my meals. If you can be creative with your lunch options and other meals there's no reason why this little guy would disappoint you, bore you, or not bring a smile to your face.

I love it, and would buy another Kotobuki bento set in a heartbeat.

I was pleased with the thickness and quality of the melamine that makes up the three sections of this bento set. As other reviewers have mentioned, the size is small compared to US lunchboxes, but if you efficiently pack a compact "bento lunch", your children get plenty of nutritious food. I found that the lidded compartment in the middle is not adequate to pack soup for kids who may not be able to handle their lunch container with special care... so I pack all solid/semi-solid foods, and my children are lunch-room stars. I originally bought the matching "geisha" set for my 10-year-old daughter, and added this for her twelve-year-old brother when he expressed envy.

I bough both this set and the Geisha set because they were too adorable to turn down. I use both of them almost daily to bring lunch and snacks to work. My typical set up.

Bottom: Rice or smoked salmon
Middle: dish to go with rice or salad to go with smoked salmon
Top: Berries or croutons for salad.

For snacks, I use it for more fruits. Typically more berries, mango or melons.

I was expecting this to be small but this set is TINY-- can actually fit inside another standard sized lunch box with room for a drink. For the price, this looks like an expensive oversized lego minifigure, that's why 4 instead of 5 stars, but it is a lot better than typical lunch box or other storage options. My 3rd grader doesn't eat much and aside from needing to make tiny sandwiches with a biscuit cutter this is very convenient. The bottom can be used for rice or other starches, the middle good for sliced fruits and vegetables, the top section converts into a cute little bowl and includes a plastic spill-proof lid that can be applied to the middle section or the top depending on contents. Overall if cut properly could fit at least a cup of rice, pasta or even 2/4 of sandwich if cut properly, a full serving of cut fruit or vegetables and a light snack.

If you've ever fantasized about eating your lunch and or dinner out of a tiny samurai's head, this product is for you. He keeps your lunch fresh and tasty all day long by fighting off bad flavor ninjas with his tiny bento tanto(not included). A must buy for all lunchtime aficionados.

I was having a hard time finding something my 4th grader wouldn't be embarrassed to bring to school (frogs, ducks and pigs won't cut it)! We spent some time looking online until we found this one. It just came yesterday and it fits perfectly in his lunch box. It's a great size for tortilla roll ups on one level and cut fruit or veggies in the second. The hat won't hold anything without spilling, but he figured out that we can put his little ranch dressing holder under the hat and it fits perfectly. He is so excited to bring this to school tomorrow and I'm sure he'll be the envy of all his friends. It is a bit pricier than most, but it's well made and if it helps my son to eat healthier food - then it's money well spent!

I loved this product, I bring my lunch to work in it every day.

Will address 1 complaint though:

It's small.

Well... If you think this is small you need to begin portioning your meals because I can't finish eating the amount of food I fit in here and I'm a 200lb 23 year old male who loves eating more than breathing. You can't fit your triple ham and bacon mayo deluxe sandwich in here. Eat some vegetables, eat some rice/ noodles. I put a packet of clear miso into the top bowl in case I'm a little more hungry, but if you are unsatisfied with the size of this for a LUNCH container, you shouldn't spend the money on it and go buy a book about eating right because your body is probably hurting.
