IF, I manage to get water till the brim on the top hole and put it in the freezer, it is almost impossible to get slide the rubber halves off and get an ice deathstar.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a friend of mine after she shared a picture of one of the ice cubes on her Facebook page. She was absolutely thrilled when she got it, and we instantly set about making our first Death Star, all the while making horrible puns, such as "That's no cube..."

Anyway, fast forward a couple hours, and we discovered a couple things that I'd like to share with you:

The product is made of two silicone semi-globes which you push together (and pull apart to remove your Death Star), with a hole in the top half through which you fill it with water. We found that if you didn't make sure the two halves were very firmly pushed together, you end up with a ring of ice (think Saturn) around the hemisphere of the cube.

In addition, as water expands when it freezes, if you fill the mold up with just a little too much water, you'll end up with an nipple coming out of the hole that you filled it through. It looks like an ice-booby. Hehehe.

Anyway, hopefully knowing those two things should make your first Death Star Ice Ball Cube Thing a success. These really are super cool, and rock for parties.

If they’re in stock at Thinkgeek.com, you can save some dough. But these are great. I mean, it’s the Death Star. IN YOUR WHISKEY. If you’re the type of person who sees this item, and thinks, “That looks awesome!” Then you are correct, and you will love it. If you’re the type who sees this item and thinks, “really?!”, then you are wrong, and you should re-evaluate your life.

Srsly: DEATH STAR IN YOUR WHISKEY.

"That Blast came from the Death Star! That thing is Operational!" - Lando Calrissian, year unknown.

Fortunately, the only thing blasting out of my Kotobukiya Star Wars: Death Star Silicone Tray (KSW:DSST) is delicious cocktails! Often I'll be sipping on a philyorita in a rocks glass with my death star ice cube in it and someone will be like "Where did you get that spherical ice cube?". Now, here's the best part, I get to respond "That's no spherical ice cube, that's the death star you idiot". I enjoy myself every time this happens. No one else finds it amusing. You're welcome for sharing.

When these same friends find out that I also own Kotobukiya Star Wars R2D2 Silicone Tray and Kotobukiya Star Wars Han Solo Silicone Tray they are super weirded out. Like, facebook defriending weirded out. Thankfully Mrs. Philyodaddy is locked in with a ring on it, so she can't leave me. It's a trap.

Now let me rate the KSW:DSST in the categories provided by amazon:
How much fun is this toy: 4/5 stars - 5 stars because it makes drinks more fun MINUS 1 star deducted because I don't know in what bizarro world this qualifies as a "toy". Maybe a dog toy if that silicone is totally safe to chew, unknown at this time.

How would you rate this toy's educational value? 5/5 - The destruction of the death star is a laudable lesson in exposing the power of nature over the myth of technological dominance.

How durable is this toy: 5/5 - hasn't broken yet. Fill it about 80% of the way and it makes a perfect ice Death Star. Every time.

This product makes pretty good Death Stars. There's a notch in the silicone, so you know you're setting it up properly. Sometimes the ice cracks, and I haven't found an easy way around it yet, but we have jokingly referred to the whole ones as Episode IV stars and the broken ones as Episode VI stars.

I love the idea for this, my husband and I are huge star wars fans. However, it's a little bit of a guessing game. How much water is too much, or too little. It says 80%, but you have to guess how much that is. It is hard to pry apart at first, but after a couple of times it's easy enough to get open. Now getting it open without cracking is an entirely different story. It's a great idea, but I wouldn't buy it again.

I purchased this for a friend but couldn't help but use it first. It creates a great mold of the Death Star and if the water is clear the result is just beautiful. Only 2 minor issues. First, it can be a pain to get the ice out of the mold. I finally found a way to do it using a plastic knife to separate the silicon pieces. Second, the ice ball it creates is heavy. So be gentle when putting it into a glass cup. Overall I was very happy with the purchase.

My wife thinks I'm crazy but I love this ice tray. I have a gallon bag in the freezer full of ready made ice orbs for company or anytime I want a cool looking ice cube. And it only takes one to cool down any drink.

Perfect size for a whiskey tumbler. Only problem is that it melts. Must be caused by fluids getting in through the thermal exhaust port. (Right below the main port.)
