Book Description

March 25, 2008 0826120989 978-0826120984 9

"[A]n excellent introductory text for the study of this subject, and medical students, residents, and graduate students in public health, allied health sciences, or social sciences will find it a thorough yet engaging grounding in the field. Professionals already practicing in health care delivery, health services research, or health policy will find this a handy and up-to-date reference with encyclopedic breadth but only basic analysis. Both groups will find ample resources for continuing education and will likely return to this text for quick reference for years to come."
--S. Ryan Greysen, MD
JAMA

How do we understand and also assess the health care of America? Where is health care provided? What are the characteristics of those institutions which provide it? Over the short term, how are changes in health care provisions affecting the health of the population, the cost of care, and access to care?

Health Care Delivery in the United States, now in a thoroughly updated and revised 9th edition, discusses these and other core issues in the field. Under the editorship of Dr. Kovner and with the addition of Dr. James Knickman, Senior VP of Evaluation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, leading thinkers and practitioners in the field examine how medical knowledge creates new healthcare services. Emerging and recurrent issues from wide perspectives of health policy and public health are also discussed.

With an easy to understand format and a focus on the major core challenges of the delivery of health care, this is the textbook of choice for course work in health care, the handbook for administrators and policy makers, and the standard for in-service training programs.

Newly Revised Instructor's Guide:
Free to Instructors!
Available as a book or as an online file, the 9th edition instructor's guide features a synopsis of each chapter, numerous tables and figures, key words, additional discussion points, and suggested reading. Either version is available with a verified order of seven or more copies. New to this edition are PowerPoint slides as well as an Instructor's Guide. (Qualified instructors may contact us to receive the files.)

I am using this book to guide me through a self-study of the U.S. health care system. This textbook was used in a fall 2008 course on the U.S. Health Care System taught by Peter Budetti, M.D., J.D., at the Department of Health Administration and Policy, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. While only four years old, this 9th edition is already out-of-date in some ways, since so much has happened recently as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordability Act of 2010. But it's a good place to start.

I'm blogging about my self-study experience, and current events at the intersection of health care policy and politics. If you are interested in my blog, visit [...]

4.0 out of 5 stars Good summary of US health system November 7, 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
For members of the healthcare profession or a studious lay person. this provides a very good review of the current "nonsystem". Gives pause about how current legislation could improve it for all citizens.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too wordy for what you'd want to learn June 25, 2014
By William
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As stated this book drones about health care delivery, it made it a very painful read to keep up with course material. Also very hard to scan read as it just drones on and on not making the main points clearly readable. I just read the main sections and bold points to get me on the right track. Overall a pretty disappointing book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good June 2, 2014

Overall this is a good book; however, edition 9 and edition 10 does not have all the charts in the book. I had to order this book for my class and my professor decided to use a different edition, and some of the charts were not in the 9th edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Purchased for a public health course January 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for a course I was taking, as it was mandatory / required. It was appropriate for use in a grad school-level class (at the time) but with recent / ongoing changes in the American health care system, it may no longer be up-to-date. I purchase it here since it was significantly less online as compared to the cost in the average university's campus bookstore.
