Legendary Sea Beasties...For Younger Readers!, November 13, 2010
This review is from: Kraken: Fact or Fiction? (Creature Scene Investigation) (Library Binding)
Of all the creatures that roam - or may roam - the seas, the kraken is the most legendary. Images of monstrously large, multi-tentacled monsters rising from the sea to engulf hapless ships in a death grip have enlivened B-movies for years. Rick Emmer examines the legendary kraken and its real-life counterparts in this entertaining and informative 2010 Chelsea House Publishers release. Although intended for teen readers, KRAKEN - FACT OR FICTION? can be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Although large squid exist, do monstrously large squid - or kraken - exist? Emmer discusses the historic origins of the kraken legend, media's fascination with the kraken legend, accounts of kraken-ship encounters and real-life "Cousins of the Kraken" before presenting a "Final Report on the Kraken." Emmer's entertaining text is complimented by b&w and color photographs of squid and octopus, historic illustrations of the kraken in action, maps, etc. Listings of books, magazine articles, web sites and other materials are included should the reader want to pursue the subject. (The book is part of the 'Creature Scene Investigation' series).
For an evenhanded and interesting summary of the kraken, Rick Emmer's book is hard to beat. And what is Emmer's final verdict on this particular sea beastie? Sorry; you'll have to read the book to find out! Recommended.
