Monsters from the Deep...For Younger Readers!, July 3, 2010
This review is from: The Kraken (Monsters) (Hardcover)
Of all the legendary monsters, the kraken has always topped my list as Bad Boy #1. Its very moniker - Kraken - brings images of bones being crushed and cracked. Then too the Kraken has always had an air of malevolence, of mindless, pitiless evil surging out of the depths to prey on helpless sailors and their ships as well! Turns out the krakens of legend were most probably giant squids. Jennifer Guess McKerley relates the fascinating history of the kraken in this 2008 Kidhaven Press release.
Tales of giant tentacled, fiery-eyed sea beasties date back to the 1600s, various names being attached to those creatures. Acceptance that such creatures did exist finally came in the mid-1860s. In the years since, dead specimens washed up on beaches and live specimens captured on film has given the public a clearer picture of krakens/giant squids. The kraken has also left its mark in popular literature like TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and MOBY DICK as well as movies like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.
McKerley does a good job of introducing readers 9-12 to the legend and reality of krakens. The book includes first-person accounts of sightings, period drawings and contemporary photographs that bring it to life. For those seeking more info, THE KRAKEN includes books, Internet sources and websites.
Younger readers interested in this sea beastie will enjoy THE KRAKEN. It is a well-written, nicely-illustrated introduction sure to please. Recommended.
