Another Ripper from Naxos,
By Bernard Michael O'Hanlon (Wilsons Prom, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kraus: Complete Symphonies Vol.3 (Audio CD)
It is a misnomer to called Krauss the Swedish Mozart - he has far more affinity with the Haydn of the Sturm und Drang period with the syncopated rhythms and a general air of agitation. He is always best in a minor key, hence the attractions of the disc above. Each symphony has a personality of its own. They may not be the last word in profundity but clearly a talented mid-tier composer is at work - it makes one wonder why it was left to Naxos to exhume his works. Overall they are stylishly played and well recorded. The notes are scholarly. What else do you want me to say?
