Many chapters poorly written; many technical inaccuracies,
By NutritionDoc (Xenia, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Krause's Food & Nutrition Therapy (Hardcover)
To be honest, this text doesn't deserve any stars in the rating. Hoping for the quality text that I purchased years ago, I updated my library with this edition. I could not be more disappointed with the writing, the incorrect terminology (the term is ptyalism, not ptylinism - pg 182; the word is 'prostate' not prostrate; and no, osteopenia is not a disease), the variety of definitions for the same term at the beginning of several chapters, many of the charts, and the review of drugs during pregnancy and lactation -- just to name a few. I cannot recommend this text.

The "Gold Standard" among nutrition texts....,

Krause's Food & Nutrition Therapy
"I very seldom post reviews for products but I will make an exception here. I bought my first edition of Krause's Food and Nutrition Therapy while attending Penn State University in the early 80's and have updated a couple of times since. Nutrition has become highly specialized and it is next to imposible for any one person to be an expert in all aspects of nutrition therapy. Over the years, I have referred to this text more times than I can count because it is considered "the gold standard" among nutrition texts. I can't imagine a dietitian not having Krause's Food and Nutrition Therapy on her/his shelf." Lori Langer, RD,MEd,CLT,LDN

Not a good textbook,

I am a human nutrition major at Ohio State University and I have taken plenty of nutrition courses-obviously; however, I have had way better textbooks. This is a very dull text. The setup is awful. For the most part, since I majored in science I tend to keep my science textbooks, even though they might be outdated in the future I like to reflect on them from time to time. But this textbook is bad, bad, bad. I tried to open it and give it a try. After the first few weeks of using it, I could not stand it. I was just too boring; not to mention there are numerous errors, which can hurt you, depending on the class and the material you need. Overall, I say if you are a nutrition or science major, there are plenty of better books out. Not worth it. I only gave it a two star because it is still my major and I feel that although the book is set up badly, the author had to try-at one point. Good luck.

Krause's new edition is a great way to learn and reference food & nutrition therapy. This is a comprehensive, easy to read, but thorough piece of literature essential for all nutrition experts in the medical field. Without this book, finishing my collegiate studies and becoming a well-rounded professional would be impossible. With this book, the medical world becomes understandable and clearly essential for nutritionists and dietitians to be a part of. Anyone considering this book as an addition to their library, or a textbook would not be disappointed with purchasing it.

Very clinical, yet not as difficult to read as it may have been. I particularly like the case studies because they provide a practical application of the material, so most concepts are not left abstract. Overall, it provides the best case scenario for this type of text.

Pretty much okay,

When I received the book the first thing I noticed was the black marker scribbled or drawn all over the outter pages (not in or on the actual pages). The book did not look all that new like I had hoped, you can tell it had definitely been through a rough year but I haven't seen any pink or yellow highlights or marks in the book just yet so overall it was okay.
