About the Author

Boaz Aviram is one of the only Krav Maga experts, and holds the secrets of this most effective Hand-to-Hand fighting technique ever developed. Aviram served as the Israel Defense Force Fighting Fitness Academy Krav Maga Chief Instructor, succeeding Eli Avikzar and Imrich Lichtenfeld, the father of Krav Maga.

The name Krav Maga was first used in the IDF to designate the Hand-to-Hand fighting system developed by Imrich Lichtenfeld, a former European champion in three branches of sports: boxing, gymnastics and wrestling.  After serving two years in the British Legions, he immigrated to the future State of Israel, where he initially trained Israeli underground guerrillas in the use of a knife, stick, swimming and Hand-to-Hand combat. When the new State of Israel was created, he became the first IDF Chief Instructor of Hand-to-Hand fighting.  Krav Maga was adopted shortly thereafter as the official Hand-to-Hand system of the IDF.

When the founder of Krav Maga retired from the IDF, he transformed the 21-hour military intensive training curriculum into a 4 year Dojo training system based on the Japanese Judo ranking system.  This civilian adaptation was diluted to be taught over long periods of time, and extracted many of its lethal elements.  Imi's rationale was to keep the essence of Krav Maga in the IDF, and make a Civilian system suitable to teach youth.  Upon his death, the generic name Krav Maga ("Contact Combat" in Hebrew) was adopted by many Martial Arts instructors who respected Imi when he was alive, but commercialized his system after his departure.

Boaz Aviram, determined to preserve the spirit and body of the original Krav Maga, had published the book "Krav Maga - Use of the Human Body as a Weapon: Philosophy and Application of Hand to Hand Fighting Training System," with tells the true history of the system, its rationale, uniqueness, advantages, and completely documents what the training system is all about and how to use it.

As an instructor and lifelong student of Krav Maga, I consider this book a personal bible. Not only does it show, in detail, the techniques used in Krav Maga, but it digs into the philosophy and history of the system. Mr. Boaz Aviram, who is one of the top instructors in the world, does not just offer a "manual" of how to perform Krav Maga, but a Textbook on the entire system. I would highly recommend this volume for any serious student of the system. This is the real deal, not the watered down, McDojo versions you get from other manuals (that come in three volumes). Mr. Aviram is not only a great instructor, but I great philospher when it comes to the serious aspects of Krav Maga and self defense. If you are an instructor who teaches serious Krav Maga and do not have a copy of this book, then you are not teaching true Krav Maga and you are short changing yourself and your students.

Going through Boaz's book is like discovering a simple path to excellence.
I've been through martial arts for a long time and the way to master movements and get the best out of our bodies is usuallly long and technically complicated.
Boaz found a way to express things very clearly.
I am not saying you will become a master after reading it. But, having trained and whishing to really understand what's inside the Krav Maga method, Boaz's book is the best short track.
Reading is clear, pictures are self explanatory and most of all the aim is very well defined and... reached.
I recomend the book to all martial arts praticants. No need to be a several dan black belt to get very usefull knowledge out of it.
It's all about "Using the human body" and all of us know how to do it every day.
A milestone in martial art books.
Nicolas

I heard about Krav Maga through the media and was curious about it. Since I always wanted to learn Self Defense, I came across the book Krav Maga - Use of the Human Body as a Weapon: Philosophy and Application of Hand to Hand Fighting Training System. I looked at the author's website kravmaganewyork.net and found out his credentials are exhibited as a Top Expert in Krav Maga.

My eyes were opened and suddenly I came to realize what Krav Maga and Self Defense is all about put in a simplistic methodical explanation throughout the book. It hit me that I could actually see a structure in Krav Maga that I had never seen in any other martial art I tried as a kid.

After reading his book, I also bought his video Pure Krav Maga - Self Defense Mastery, and I started to train in his techniques with my boyfriend. I enjoyed kicking my Boyfriend's rear end, and my confidence increased greatly. Now I am not afraid to walk alone in the dark anymore. I weight less than 100 lbs, and learned in the first DVD how to generate one and and a half times my body weight into a Knockout Punch.

I now feel confident that if ever in a threatening situation I would quickly be able to react with the appropriate move as if second nature.

Format: Paperback
As a young Israeli paratrooper in the early 1980s, I first encountered Chief Krav Maga Instructor Boaz Aviram at the Wingate Institute and Commando Training Academy. Without question, he remains to this day one of the finest Krav Maga instructors in the world, and the publication of his comprehensive book is a gift to KM practitioners everywhere. Boaz delivers a clear and comprehensive guide to the core principles of Krav Maga, and utilizing his vast knowledge of other martial arts, demonstrates why the techniques he perfected over the course of a lifetime can offer the best options for practical self-defense. Although hundreds of Krav Maga schools have sprouted up all over the world, and many books on the "art" have been written, this work is essential to any serious Krav Maga practitioner. It's comparable to owning the diary of a great Samurai master, who happens to be still with us, and is still instructing. Don't miss it.

Boaz Aviram is probably the most qualified person to write about Krav Maga. He was Chief Instructor in the Israeli Military and studied under the man who invented the technique. This book is the most comprehensive and authentic. If you are serious about self defense and Krav Maga specifically, this is the book I would recommend. Krav Maga is considered to be the best method for hand to hand combat.

Finally a clear and well- written book on the authentic practice of Krav Maga from an author who trained with the originators of the system. Seems like there are a lot of imitators on the market but this is the real thing. The philosophy was as enlightening as the practical points on how to master the techniques. The photos are also very helpful and nicely done.

"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." ~ William Arthur Ward.
Grandmaster Boaz Aviram inspires.

I wish I had a book like this years ago. I needed it. Earlier in my life I trained in Judo and Karate, and thought I at least knew enough to be able to defend myself if I was ever physically attacked. But I learned the hard way that the techniques I depended upon and practiced over and over and over were not going to help me in real-life situations. I found myself at the losing end of every physical assault against me. I had no defensive skills. I discovered that MA is actually sport with rules for the safety of the participants. Complicated techniques enmeshed with rules learned in a dojo are not going to be of much use when confronted by an attacker who does not play by any rules.

I made the decision to find real defensive training. I bought several books on self defense, including most of the Krav Maga books. Some had very simple sketches for illustrations, and others had impressive, beautiful full-color photos. Most of them contained some helpful info, but they all left me with just about as many unanswered questions as before I started reading. Some contained poor and inaccurate descriptions of Krav Maga techniques and added MMA techniques masquerading as Krav Maga. But most importantly they ALL lacked an adequate introduction and explanation of the foundation principles of Krav Maga. Without the understanding or even an awareness of them, everything else I read seemed fragmented. I wasn't able to see the 'big picture'.. how everything fit together.
